I don't know if it's me or the thrillers/mysteries I have read so far, but the "awesome plot twists" that shock everyone just leave me feeling bored. The resolution of the mystery in this book was not really satisfying, and the ending felt a bit rushed. Whilst I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the whole book in general, but other than that, I couldn't really seem to care for our main character.
The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware is a by the numbers suspense thriller that could've been written by just about anybody. If this was my first book of this nature, I would probably be fawning right now. But it's not. It felt like I was reading some sort of template wherein the names of the characters were just replaced, the challenges faced by the lead character slightly modified and the guilty party one of five. The story is told by practically one person over a series of letters. It is an account of what led her to jail and why she is innocent. It boasts a couple of massive soap opera level twists, identity misdirection and a deliciously creepy atmosphere. The setting of somewhere remote in Britain will never stop being captivating to me. So, I loved this book but rating it a two because of its not so creative use of tropes. Plus, the story featured lots of bratty kids. So I got very very triggered by plenty of the scenes. Being a nanny like that lead character is my worst nightmare. Do I recommend this book? Yes. Would I read something like this again even after complaining about it? Also yes. I need fiction like this wherein the unexpected is expected. I want to be shocked on the 80% mark. I want to be transported to that isolated countryside wherein murder is just around the corner. Kudos to Ruth Ware, I have three of her novels and will read the remaining two soon and will absolutely buy more.
a 3 star thriller but a 4 star reading experience! 3.5 overall

Und das Ende...so vorhersehbar, dass ich fast lachen könnte. Um ehrlich zu sein bereue ich die 10,99 für das EBook. Schmerzlich.
Mein nächstes Buch von Ruth Ware, die mich immer wieder zu fesseln weiss. Im Vergleich zu den zwei vorherigen Büchern ist dieses hier zwar nicht ganz so stark, und lange lag ich bei einer Bewertung von drei Sternen, aber das Ende hat dann das Steuer noch eimal herumgerissen. Dazu verrate ich aber nichts ;) Mir hat es vor allem die Stimmung im angetan. Sowas kann Ware einfach ausserordentlich gut. Auch in diesem Buch wissen wir nicht, woran wir wirklich sind. Was versteckt sich hinter all diesen Begebenheiten? Was ist wahr, was ist Trug, was Einbildung? Was einige Leser vielleicht an diesem Titel stören könnte, ist, dass Rowan nicht unbedingt eine sympathische Heldin ist. Man hat nicht unbedingt Mitleid mit ihr, ich auf jeden Fall nicht. Oft konnte ich ab ihr nur den Kopf schütteln. Aber interessanterweise machte dies die Geschichte für mich glaubhafter und lebensnaher. Was wiederum dazu führte, dass die drückende Atmosphäre nur noch dichter wurde. Im Übrigen fand ich nur schon dieses übermodernisierte Haus, in dem in jedem Raum Kameras hängen, enorm gruselig. Ich würde nicht dort arbeiten wollen. Aber so richten wir uns mehr und mehr in unserer Gesellschaft ein. Hier zeigt uns Ruth Ware den Gläsernen Bürger und nimmt uns auch gleich die Illusion, dass eine 100%ige Überwachung zu mehr Sicherheit führt...
enjoyed this one so, so much. it didn't scare me but i liked the slightly creepy atmosphere; the story had me guessing (and of course i had no idea), the reveals were all perfect and surprised me quite a bit. also, i don't read many thrillers but i have to say, the letter-format is very clever and unusual and plays with the unreliability of the narrator!! while the writing style was rather basic and to the point despite being descriptive, something very smart was, in my opinion the interplay between the house with its two personalities (the victorian v.s. modern day smart home) to the main character with her real and her fake one ! loved that! and the big solution in the end...yes. whoa. now i want to check out ruth ware's other books as well!

Like a goosebumps story for adults with a twist that almost saves it from being ultimately forgettable.
