Beschreibung

A fragile peace gives way to conspiracy, betrayal, and rebellion in this sequel to the New York Times bestselling A Little Hatred from epic fantasy master Joe Abercrombie.

Peace is just another kind of battlefield . . .

Savine dan Glokta, once Adua's most powerful investor, finds her judgement, fortune and reputation in tatters. But she still has all her ambitions, and no scruple will be permitted to stand in her way.

For heroes like Leo dan Brock and Stour Nightfall, only happy with swords drawn, peace is an ordeal to end as soon as possible. But grievances must be nursed, power seized, and allies gathered first, while Rikke must master the power of the Long Eye . . . before it kills her.

Unrest worms into every layer of society. The Breakers still lurk in the shadows, plotting to free the common man from his shackles, while noblemen bicker for their own advantage. Orso struggles to find a safe path through the maze of knives that is politics, only for his enemies, and his debts, to multiply.

The old ways are swept aside, and the old leaders with them, but those who would seize the reins of power will find no alliance, no friendship, and no peace lasts forever.

And the next one is done 😀 Some thoughts... I just love this series. The characters are all phenomenal, although, as always, not really likable, but you find yourself rooting for some of them nonetheless. Leo made his way to the top of my least favorite characters. How can someone be so naive and idiotic? But the best of men become idiots just because they want to be Heroes. Savine didn’t do better, like she promised in the first book, but whoever does in those books? Instead, she did worse. I really liked her cool ambition, but it got quite a negative twist now. Rikke is really cool, and I like her character development a lot. The people surrounding her are fun, and I always had a really good time with her chapters. Orso really became one of my favorites. He is very much like Jezal, just trying to do the right thing, which doesn't really work out most of the time. He makes a fool out of himself all the time, but he is so cunning and witful. I’m very excited to see more of his progress. There is a big war in this book, which Joe always does great. Most of the PoVs are not of our protagonists but of normal foot soldiers. You get to know them really quick, what their thoughts are, why they’re here, and then then they’re gone as quickly. This shows that war isn’t the heroic thing everyone is talking about. He did the same in The Heroes, and I loved it. The ending was quite unexpected, which also made clear that you can’t trust anyone here.😅 I’m really excited about the final book now! Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This might be a new favourite in the series. It felt more focused than A Little Hatred, with most on the attention being on one central conflict, and almost every scene was a memorable moment. With this being such a ride, single scenes may not leave as much of an impact on me than in other first law books, but as a whole, it worked perfectly for me, making it so hard to put down but forcing me to do so to emotionally process everything happening around these dispicable lovable characters.
