Well. Well. Where to begin? I had an open afternoon, so I started reading KU (I needed something short and spicy). The story was recommended, so I gave it a go… To be honest, the world built here was fascinating. It’s a well-imagined plot, but poorly written. A number of things disturb me, starting with the characterization of the fae: all of them are Nymphomaniacs. They will literally F*ck anything. Starting with our MMC: the King. Arrogant (not the positive kind), selfish and mean. Don’t get me wrong, I like a good alpha male, but that gave me the yikes. A number of plot holes were present, as well as characters that had arcs but were seemingly abandoned. It just didn’t have tension, and I was underwhelmed by June's backstory. There was an interesting side story about women going missing that I think could have been brought up more, but nope. Besides that, I liked the dynamic between June and the king, but what I didn't care about was the language. It seemed crude, as I said before, just for the sake of being. It didn't flow with the story and really detracted from what I thought was a compelling story. OMG, and don’t get me started on some of the passages that cringed the hell out of me… just no. But some of them were so cringy that I laughed with my glass of wine. It would have been a great opening to another series if sexualization and cruelty had been reduced. The characters were fascinating and highly immoral, but interesting. Well, it was good enough for an afternoon distraction. But is the hype on KU and any platform justified? It’s a no from me.
