The Chronicles of Castellane is one of the rare series where the second book is even better than the first one.

This book is not particularly innovative when it comes to the main story and a seasoned fantasy reader might see one or two of the twists and turns coming, but The Ragpicker King drew me in either way. We pick up right after the ending of the first book and still follow Lin and Kel - both dealing with the fallout of their decisions in their individual ways, while the situation on the Hill comes to a head with new players added to the mix. I really enjoyed the higher stakes and overall more dramatic mood of the book, because it highlighted how different the characters and their individual motivations truly are. My heart broke for Conor, trapped in a life he so desperately wants to shrug off like a coat, and Kel, compromised in his loyalty towards Conor by his eagerness to uncover the conspiracy threatening Castellane. Lin, at odds with her own wants and needs while growing into the person her friends and people need her to become is a sight to behold and I loved her even more the second time around. The ending left me reeling and made me a little wistful that I‘ll probably have to wait at least another year for the sequel.
