Christopher Priest's The Prestige is the inspiration for the movie directed by Christopher Nolan, starring Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale

In 1878, two young stage magicians clash in the dark during the course of a fraudulent séance. From this moment on, their lives become webs of deceit and revelation as they vie to outwit and expose one another.

Their rivalry will take them to the peaks of their careers, but with terrible consequences. In the course of pursuing each other's ruin, they will deploy all the deception their magicians' craft can command--the highest misdirection and the darkest science.

Blood will be spilled, but it will not be enough. In the end, their legacy will pass on for generations...to descendants who must, for their sanity's sake, untangle the puzzle left to them.

Very suspenseful and intriguing. I would recommend this book to fans of The Thirteenth Tale for similarities in atmosphere, timelines and themes, however, The Prestige worked better for me personally. I loved how all the POV´s were written so differently from each other, more so than I am used from one single author. For example, Borden´s notes read like a true classic. The whole writing was very skillfull and enjoyable to read. The characters were fascinating, Borden and Angier both had major flaws but also some redeeming qualities. I have seen the movie before some years ago and still remembered the main twists, but that was not in the way of my enjoyment, on the contrary, I was able to pick up on subtle hints. At first I didn´t know if the modern day perspective would add enough to the narrative but it absolutely did. This book demands some suspension of disbelieve, especially since it is a pretty straight historical fiction for the most part, with the SFF elements kicking in very late. I think how much one like this book is very dependent of how you feel about the twist and how ok you are with the flaws of the magicians, if themes like adultery and never letting go of the past to a point of obsession annoy you too much, maybe stay away from this one. For me, this novel was great, however I´m not sure how much the twist would have worked for me if I hadn´t already seen the movie, it might have been just as fine, I don´t know.
