Beschreibung

In this highly anticipated sequel to the New York Times bestselling The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, Felicity Montague must use all her womanly wits and wiles to achieve her dreams of becoming a doctor—even if she has to scheme her way across Europe to do it. A must-have for fans of Mackenzi Lee’s extraordinary and Stonewall Honor-winning novel.
A year after an accidentally whirlwind grand tour with her brother Monty, Felicity Montague has returned to England with two goals in mind—avoid the marriage proposal of a lovestruck suitor from Edinburgh and enroll in medical school. However, her intellect and passion will never be enough in the eyes of the administrators, who see men as the sole guardians of science.
But then a window of opportunity opens—a doctor she idolizes is marrying an old friend of hers in Germany. Felicity believes if she could meet this man he could change her future, but she has no money of her own to make the trip. Luckily, a mysterious young woman is willing to pay Felicity’s way, so long as she’s allowed to travel with Felicity disguised as her maid.
In spite of her suspicions, Felicity agrees, but once the girl’s true motives are revealed, Felicity becomes part of a perilous quest that leads them from the German countryside to the promenades of Zurich to secrets lurking beneath the Atlantic.

Everyone said that it was bad... I agree

This book's plot does not pick up as fast as its predecessor but as soon as it does, I fell absolutely in love with it. The three protagonists are all girls with aspirations in their own rights, their own motivations that sometimes clash and sometimes work well with each other. There's appearances from the characters we know and love from [b:The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue|29283884|The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue (Montague Siblings, #1)|Mackenzi Lee|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1492601464l/29283884._SY75_.jpg|49527118]. My only problem with this book was that the first half had quite a few moments that subjected me to second hand embarrassment, though not in a way that kept me from wanting to read on.

GREAT BOOK!

The Book is well writen and easy to understand. It's great that you don't need to have read the previous books. I also love that there is a lot of good queer representation.

This is the first book in a while that gripped me so much I finished it in almost one sitting. I enjoyed it a lot more than the first one, partly because the plot is more to my taste, but mostly because Felicity is such a witty and strong character. I love her and Johanna's friendship and the thoughts on feminism they discussed.

“In the company of women like this— sharp-edged as raw diamonds but with soft hands and hearts, not strong in spite of anything but powerful because of everything— I feel invincible. Every chink and rut and battering wind has made us tough and brave and impossible to strike down. We are mountains— or perhaps temples, with foundations that could outlast time itself.” Powerful women, scientists and pirates, what more could I want? The plot is definitely a wild ride and impossible to sum up, but I just appreciated those women standing up for themselves and making their spaces in a world where their only purpose was to get married. I also loved the diversity, with some queer and muslim rep in the main cast. “Everyone has heard stories of women like us—cautionary tales, morality plays, warnings of what will befall you if you are a girl too wild for the world, a girl who asks too many questions or wants too much. If you set off into the world alone. Everyone has heard stories of women like us, and now we will make more of them.”

THIS WAS SO MUCH FUN. <3 like with gentleman's guide, i enjoyed this book for its fast-pacedness, it's crazy ideas, the banter, and the lovely characters! i already loved felicity in monty's book and i'm so glad she got to tell her own story. she's so determined and smart and brave, and i admire her while also being able to relate to her (a bit!). my favourite was sim, though, and i would have loved to see more of her. really missed her around the middle!! felicity's interactions with her were also some of my favourite parts of the book, and while i loved that there wasn't any romance in this book, i felt that they were so sweet in their almost-romantic way! around the middle part, i also lost interest in the story a tiny little bit, so that's why i'm taking away one star. the remaining 4 are for laugh-out-loud moments, feminist power, friendship, and so many cool adventures!!

When I got this book in the mail, I  was excited, but I was also scared it wouldn't be able to compare to the Gentleman's Guide. I loved that one so much and I just didn't know how Felicity's story would hold up to it, especially since my favourite part of Gentleman's Guide was the romance. And boy, was I wrong to not believe in this book.  The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy has no romance and I enjoyed it a lot. I concentrates on the relationship between three women and their struggle, to find a place in this world ruled by men. Felicity is trying to get a leg up in the medical world, but the men being on top are pushing her down constantly. It's heart wrenching to see, how her qualifications and talent are ignored just cause her gender is regarded as inferior and even more heart wrenching to know, that this is still happening to this day.  The other two female characters in the center of this story are Johanna and Sim. Johanna has a very special place in my heart, for her German heritage and her love of dogs, but also for how she is allowed to like pretty things and dressing up, but also being clever and wanting to matter in this world. Sim is completely different, a muslim sailor out in the world, trying to impress her family and make them see she's wort as much as her brothers.  The adventure in this one is just as, if not more, gripping than the adventure in Gentleman's Guide and I was truly excited to see where it was going, once it was in full swing. They story took a bit too long, to get really started, but I was happy to have some time seeing how Monty and Percy where doing in the beginning.  Overall I would say this is a truly important read and everyone should go and check this out. It's a story about the struggles of women and so full of quotes that hit way too close to home. And even with that, it still has this hilarious sense of humour, that I loved so much in Gentleman's guide. A truly terrific novel.
