I needed a while to process my feelings after having finished all of the Witcher books in a three-week binging session. At first, I thought it was okay, but the longer I thought about it, the more I realized there were way too many aspects about it that pissed me off. I'm gonna go into heavy spoiler territory about the ending of the series because that's the part that pissed me off the most. Here we go. This is your last warning to stop reading. So the entire plot of the entire series is that Yennefer and Geralt are trying to reunite with Ciri to save her. Because she is their adopted daughter and they love her and they will do anything for her yada yada. Geralt forms this entire "fellowship" of allies to go and rescue Ciri. (I love Regis with my whole heart) So they finally reunite with her, there's this massive battle with the main villain of the series, Vilgefortz. What made me really mad is that Regis, a super powerful vampire who has lived 500 years and is capable of wiping out entire armies in a matter of seconds, literally gets burnt to a crisp and dies with a single spell. Nevermind the fact where he saves Ciri, and then lets her wander off by herself (and almost getting killed in the process) "because she didn't take no for an answer". I'm sorry. You're telling me this 500 year old vampire is getting told what to do by a bratty 16 year old. Really now? He will be unwavering in the face of any threat or danger, but this 16 year old brat can give him a run for his money. How far up your ass did you have to reach to come up with that logic? Okay. ANYWAY moving on. Anyway, so they save Ciri, everyone in the "fellowship" dies except Geralt and Yennefer, and then the emperor of Nilfgaard shows up. Who is actually Ciris biological father but she doesn't know that. I'm paraphrasing here, but he's like. "Yeah I'm gonna take Ciri and impregnate her so we can have powerful magical babies." We're not gonna address the issue of the incest right now. So he tells Geralt and Yen "You're gonna go into this bath and cut your wrists". And they just go "Yeah sure" and they both wander off to fuck and then kill themselves. They know what the emperor plans to do to Ciri and they just.. accept it? We have like 5 books of them chasing after Ciri and then this is the conclusion after all that hardship and the lengths they've gone through to save her? Really now? But ofcourse, it gets more ridiculous. The emperor takes Ciri and she just goes along with him without fighting or fleeing (bitch you can teleport and travel through time) and starts crying. The emperor is moved by her tears and decides to let her go. So this man, who is evil incarnate, who has murdered entire countries in order to obtain Ciri, is moved by a single tear? And lets her go? Sorry, where was this shred of humanity all this time? And it gets worse. In the final chapter, Geralt is in a bar with his friends having drinks. There's a random riot outside and everyone in town starts murdering everyone. Geralt tries to protect his friends and gets impaled by a pitchfork and dies. Yennefer tries to bring him back with magic but sacrifices her own life in doing so and then they're both dead. And then Ciri loads their bodies into a boat and sails off into the sunset and pretends they lived happily ever after even though they're both dead. And it felt so... random? There's a random murderous frenzy, everyone dies. The end. So yeah, the rest of the book was... okay. It was a tad boring at times and some chapters really overstayed their welcome, but it was these two particular chapters that really broke the camels back. I realize this isn't really a coherent review and more like a furious rant, but that's apparently what I do, I only feel motivated to write reviews when I'm furious. The entire series was a mixed bag. The first book, The Last Wish, is definitely the strongest book in the series. The chapters about Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri are enjoyable but there's also very large portions that don't really seem to add anything and where nothing seems to happen. Entire political events being narrated by some random POV, that never appears again. These books could've used some serious trimming down to get rid of the bloat and it would've been a much more enjoyable experience. 6/10 for the whole series.
