Lambda Literary Award-winning author TJ Klune’s bestselling, breakout contemporary fantasy that's "1984 meets The Umbrella Academy with a pinch of Douglas Adams thrown in." (Gail Carriger)

Linus Baker is a by-the-book case worker in the Department in Charge of Magical Youth. He's tasked with determining whether six dangerous magical children are likely to bring about the end of the world.

Arthur Parnassus is the master of the orphanage. He would do anything to keep the children safe, even if it means the world will burn. And his secrets will come to light.

The House in the Cerulean Sea is an enchanting love story, masterfully told, about the profound experience of discovering an unlikely family in an unexpected place―and realizing that family is yours.

Idk wasn’t for me

Definitely a very cute book, but I just wasn’t in the right mood for it :/

Linus Baker inspects orphanages for magical children and advises the Department in Charge Of Magical Youth on if these orphanages are led in the interest of the children or are better off closed. Never having had any ambitions, he is surprised when he is put on a top secret assignment for being known to upper management for his extremely impartial reports. There, he finds a small orphanage on a small island on the coast of the ocean (which Linus has never seen, but always wanted to), six special children (one of them the antichrist), their caretaker, and an island sprite. At first, he is wary of these peculiar children, but soon he learns that the antichrist is just a music-loving little boy with a flair for the dramatic, and so are the rest of the children just children. All the while, he also connects with the two adults on the island. I enjoyed this book. You get exactly what you expect from the story, a man set in his ways who opens up to children who also open up to him, and who finds a family in these children and the adults taking care of them. Some classic tropes, but they're classics for a reason and are very well executed in this one. The only thing that bugged me is that I found the solutions to the structural problems of their society and the orphanages a bit flimsy and not that well thought-through. The interpersonal part of the plot was great, but the part about discrimination in the society and the system seemed a bit lacking at times. I didn't always like the voices of the audiobook reader either, but that's not a problem of the book itself. I just think that if I had read the words of the books on the page, I might have gotten a slightly different impression of Arthur and Chauncy(?) in particular. Still, a book I would recommend.

Heartwarming little gay story 🥺🥰

A wonderful and well written book Beautifully build characters One of my favorite books 5/5 ⭐️

Meet the children before you get cozy.

This book has my opinion split. I bought it to experience something similar as to legens and lattes, a psalm for the wild-built and society of irregular witches. And it disappointed me somewhat gravely in the first two thirds. You are busied with getting to know all the characters and although it is somewhat cozy, the writing style just doesnt deliver it fully. This changes however drastically in the last third, also with the help of some events. On the one hand, i dislike books that need time to develop. You dont need 250 pages before you really settle in and like it before its over in another 150. On the other hand i am now looking forward to the second book since i am past the getting to know all the character stage but also dislike the feeling of "tagged on sequel because the book sold well". It remains to be seen. Its definitely a good read, but you might need to give it a while before it can fully stretches it wings to engulf you in the hot romatic relationship it promises so plainly on the cover.
