I‘m afraid I don’t quite get the hype…
Linus Baker got on my nerves SO much in the first half with how much he was muttering and stumbling over his words and not brave enough to stand up for himself and how everyone pretty much walked right over him. Also, if I have to read the sentence “that’s neither here nor there” one more time, I think I’ll scream (phrases like “I did, didn’t I?”/“You did, didn’t you?”, “I have, haven’t I?” are not very far behind on my annoyance-scale). Yes, this was sweet but I personally didn’t really like this particular kind of sweetness. I usually like cozy reads where the world turns out to be just fine but for some reason, this one didn’t work for me. Bonus points for Chauncey, he was my favorite. The other kids and Arthur Parnassus were enjoyable, too, basically I just really, really don’t like Linus Baker. And apparently I’m also very suspicious when it comes to the author himself because what do you MEAN, the sixties scoop inspired you to write this?????????? Does indigenous children being stolen from their families sound inspiring to you????
