John Boyne is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. A ladder to the sky already set the bar pretty high, but this book managed to surpass it. It's gonna go down as one of my favorite books of all time. The rollercoaster of emotions I went through during the reading experience went from heartfelt laughter, excited squeeling to heartwrenching and gutted while actually crying tears of joy and just all out sadness. How John Boyne managed to write a book so comedic while also being tragic and moving at the same time, I can only guess. You can tell the story is close to his heart, and as mentioned in his afterword, he definitely drew on his own experience as a gay man living in repressed and religious Ireland. I loved so many things in this book: the drama, the friendship, the romance, the found family, the politics and even the humor. I haven't found myself laughing out loud while reading in a while but I actually did during some of the hilarious dialogue and inner thoughts of our protagonist. Also, thank you John Boyne for not writing an absolutely depressing and tragic ending as you're self-admittedly prone to do, I really appreciated that moving epilogue.
