Beschreibung

In Lois Lowry’s Newbery Medal–winning classic, twelve-year-old Jonas lives in a seemingly ideal world. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver does he begin to understand the dark secrets behind his fragile community.
This movie tie-in edition features cover art from the movie and an exclusive Q&A with cast members, including Taylor Swift, Brenton Thwaites, and Cameron Monaghan.
Life in the community where Jonas lives is idyllic. Designated birthmothers produce newchildren, who are assigned to appropriate family units. Citizens are assigned their partners and their jobs. No one thinks to ask questions. Everyone obeys. Everyone is the same. Except Jonas.
Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community. Gradually Jonas learns that power lies in feelings. But when his own power is put to the test—when he must try to save someone he loves—he may not be ready. Is it too soon? Or too late?
The Giver has become one of the most influential novels of our time. Don't miss the powerful companion novels in Lois Lowry's Giver Quartet: Gathering Blue, Messenger, and Son.

Having read mainly adult dystopian fiction, I found this to be very shallow. While the concept and premise were refreshingly new, the execution (mainly of the second half) was a huge letdown. Firstly, I can't seem to understand the logic behind their 'plan'. Secondly, what happened to everyone in the community, assuming they have received all of those memories? I think this would have been way more interesting to hear about than Jonas and Gabriel finding 'our kind of civilization'. (This last part could also be read as a 'dream' of Jonas', which would be even more of a poor excuse for an ending, in my opinion) I also find it hard to believe that those enterily different 'ways of life' could coexist. And how could their be no animals at all in the community, not even birds flying overhead, if there wasn't some kind of wall/shield to seperate them from the rest if the world? In conclusion, I appreciated the concept but had a lot of problems with the execution. Speaking of execution, it would have been interesting to know what happened to people like Jonas' father who killed all of those innocent after receiving memories of 'love'. I can't even begin to imagine the psychological tourture they must have undergone after realizing what they had been doing. So, at least this book made me think.

I really hoped for it to get better as the Story went on, but unfortunately it didn't. I really liked the ending and the last parts of the book though.
