~Lambda Literary Award finalist for the best LGBT YA novel of 2018~
A raw, powerful, but ultimately uplifting debut novel perfect for fans of Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe from debut author Angelo Surmelis.
Seventeen-year-old Evan Panos doesn’t know where he fits in. His strict immigrant Greek mother refuses to see him as anything but a disappointment. His quiet, workaholic father is a staunch believer in avoiding any kind of conflict. And his best friend, Henry, has somehow become distractingly attractive over the summer.
Tired, isolated, scared—Evan finds that his only escape is to draw in an abandoned monastery that feels as lonely as he is. And yes, he kissed one guy over the summer. But it’s Henry who’s now proving to be irresistible. Henry, who suddenly seems interested in being more than friends. And it’s Henry who makes him believe that he deserves more than his mother’s harsh words and terrifying abuse.
But as things with Henry heat up, and his mother’s abuse escalates, Evan has to decide how to find his voice in a world where he has survived so long by being silent.
This is a powerful and revelatory coming-of-age novel based on the author’s own childhood, about a boy who learns to step into his light.

I listende to the audio book of this one and that in itself was very enjoyable. I enjoyed the voice acting and I did actually listen to the whole thing, but I gotta say this os one of my worse 3 star ratings. I did enjoy the story overall and I saw quite some promise in it. It didn't make me actively angry or annoy me so much I stopped listening or starting skipping stuff. I did like some parts of the story. I know that this is what some abuse might look like and that some religions still have big problems with homosexuality, but I'm just so exhausted by these storylines. I know this is an own voices book so I'm not gonna go into this too much as it might be taken from some personal experience. What really took me out of the story again and again was the abuse. I had this with quite some books that had abuse as a center piece and this abuse was just so horrible it actually made me not believe in what was happening. This book has his mother smash a cup into his face. I just find this abusers that are horrible 99% of the time and have zero redeeming qualities, basically oozing hate out of every pore so unrealistic. This seriously reminds me so much of another book with this type of story in the center and in this story the main character also had to be saved through romance, cause that's how it goes. Obviously many people enjoyed this book and it's overall not a bad story, it just wasn't for me and had quite some harmful insinuations about abuse. There are other reviews that did a great job of pointing out the issues in this story. When I listen to an audio book I don't pay the best attention anyway so I', not here for detailed work. I still think this is a promising debut overall.

Pro:- Insights in abusive family and feelings of a gay child- ... that's itCons:- No character development?? Even though that's what the book is about??- No consent! Every sexual act felt mildly forced and uncomfortable (which I could have accepted if it was on purpose... which it didn't feel like because the entire relationship was portrayed as ideal)- Someone said Evan was only there to be abused and to be in a relationship with Henry and... yeah, pretty much. He does not have any other characteristics- Nothing happens? No plot, no changes, no important thoughts? - Doesn't even pass the bechdel test 🚩🚩🚩- Maybe I'm not the target audience but still this confused me so much? What am I supposed to take away from this?TL;DR: Should have DNFd
