Highlight: Fantasy mit Tiefe 😍
Wow, so ganz und gar nicht, was ich erwartet habe 🤭 Wer Fantasy mit wahnsinnig gut ausgearbeiteten Charakteren und detailgetreu beschriebenen Orten sucht, wird hier fündig. Aber auch die Romance hat es ordentlich in sich 😍🔥 Bristol ist eine taffe junge Frau, die um jeden Preis ihren entführten Vater sucht und aus Geldnöten ausgerechnet einen Handel mit dem Faekönig Tyghan eingeht. Von Anfang an lässt sie sich von ihm nichts gefallen, verpasst ihm sogar Spitznamen 🤭 Mein Favorit ist Mr. High und Mighty 😂 So, so geliebt die beiden 😍
A couple of chapters into the book, I was convinced that THIS is how you write a dark fairie story! All the elements were there (portals, magic, morally grey fae king, danger for mortals, Elphame, Beltane, dark secrets...) and they were executed perfectly. Spiced up with the notion that fae are hiding in the mortal world by means of glamour, promising even more revelations, twists and turns.
Towards the middle part though, the book seems to lose its tight narration and purpose. I was especially sad that the setup of the band of apprentices didn't form the full found family I was hoping for. Though that's more on me though than the book, because I'm a sucker for found family. I also found the aspect of the tick-creature a bit over the top for what it was there to achieve. Apart from these criticisms though, it was a really engaging read. A lot of aspects to be explored, real good characters and side characters, lots of banter, non-annoying romance and many twists - although the answers to some secrets came to the reader way before the characters, which made it a bit weird already knowing what the MCs didn't. Had the book not tried to squeeze too many plotlines into one narration, this could have become a highlight. Unerwartet verworren Gibt es überhaupt einen "villain"?
Zuerst muss ich sagen die ersten 200 Seiten waren hart. Ich habs nicht geschafft much auf die Story zu konzentrieren, bin eingeschlafen oder hab das Handy gezückt (das passiert mir sonst nie). Es hat sich angefühlt als würde nichts passieren, dabei wird man relativ schnell in die Grschichte geschmissen. Es hat sich auch so angefühlt als gäbe es keinen roten Faden, dabei waren die Ziele/Motive der Charaktere von Anfang klar. Ganz seltsam. Nach den 200 Seiten wurds dann richtig spannend. Plötzlich kam Fahrt auf, es wurden mehr Intrigen gesponnen, die Lügen vom Anfang fangen an Gewicht zu bekommen, es kommen Gefühle mit ins Spiel. Das beste ist eigentlich das jeder Blickwinkel dafür sorgt, dass man glaubt das war die richtitge Entscheidung und nichts daran ist falsch. Bristol die es gefühlt allen recht machen will und auf allen Hochzeiten tanzt. Rose die nur beschützen möchte und deshalb vertrauen bricht. Kierus der nur seine Liebe und Kinder beschützen will. Tyghan der das beste für das Königreich und seinen Bruder will. Eris der zwar warnt aber trotzdem zufrieden ist wenn es passiert. Kasta die ihre Affäre schützen will. Naja Madame Chastain kann ich nicht leiden und ja okay und der rivalisierende König ist echt einfach nur Machthungrig und super gierig. Aber sonst fällt es einem schwer irgendjemanden die Schuld für irgendwas zu geben. Sehr interessant und ich bin so gespannt wie das weiter gesponnen wird.

I am so conflicted how to feel about this book, because it was by no means bad, but also didn‘t blow my socks off?? Kind of The Cruel Prince Vibes, but not executed as well. Great worldbuilding, stunning prose and interesting characters. But the love story? Major letdown that started out SO. GOOD. It had all the parts for an epic slow burn, but somehow turned into insta love halfway through? IDK MAN 🧍🏻♀️ Also interesting choice of an ending ngl didn‘t see that coming 👀

Was für ein tolles, großartiges Buch! Eine spannende Geschichte, interessante Charaktere, nachvollziehbare Gründe für alles, was geschah und geschieht und eine Welt, die sich wie von allein Stück für Stück vor dem inneren Auge entfaltet. Und der vielleicht beste letzte Satz eines Buches 🙃 Ich bin extrem gespannt, wie es weitergeht und hoffe, dass Band 2 in nicht allzu ferner Zukunft erscheint.
