What a great read!!!!! A really great book from one of the best storytellers.
An exzellent book that sketches the social and political problems of modern Britain. Every character represents an age group, profession, social and ethnic background that represents British population segments as a whole. J.K. Rowling manages to make her characters approachable in all their facetts!
I have to admit, I was one of these people who only read this book because it was written by J.K. Rowling. If I had read the description, I'd never thought about reading it, if some other author had written it. But you just gotta give books a try sometimes. I had a really hard time reading this book, maybe because I'm really not into politics and for not being a native speaker, reading it in English. You really have to admit, that it's not an easy read, for the read itself. I'm not saying that it's badly written, just not so easy to understand if you're not familiar with all the words. I wasn't quite fond with any of the characters descriped in the book, but I have to say, that they're all portrayed really well. You get into them quite easily and understand why they're acting the way they do. But for my personal assessment - I just really thought this book was plain boring. As I already said, I had a really hard time reading it. I even stopped reading it somewhere midway, because I couldn't stand reading it any longer. But the citizens of Pagford followed me for quite a long time after I put the book away and so I finished it about four months later. Coming to the end of the story, I got into it better and with things actually happening (like the actual election and Howard Mollison's birthday party and so on and so on), it wasn't as boring to read anymore as it was in the beginning for me. And coming to the final two parts of the book, I was shocked what happened to the Weedon kids. That was nothing of the ending I expecting, even though I don't really know what I did expect. In conclusion, I'd not say that this is a bad book. You just have to be interested in the plot, maybe a bit into local politics and into getting to know several families and their personal histories. Also, I'd not recommand you reading this in anything but your native language, unless you're VERY fluent in English.
If you are expecting Harry Potter or something similar I really wouldn't bother. One of the most amazing books I have read in such a long time. Gritty, hard hitting, drugs, sex and life in a small village. It has it all. Wow!
