Beschreibung

A pioneering researcher and one of the world’s foremost experts on traumatic stress offers a bold new paradigm for healing

Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Such experiences inevitably leave traces on minds, emotions, and even on biology. Sadly, trauma sufferers frequently pass on their stress to their partners and children.

Renowned trauma expert Bessel van der Kolk has spent over three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he transforms our understanding of traumatic stress, revealing how it literally rearranges the brain’s wiring—specifically areas dedicated to pleasure, engagement, control, and trust. He shows how these areas can be reactivated through innovative treatments including neurofeedback, mindfulness techniques, play, yoga, and other therapies. Based on Dr. van der Kolk’s own research and that of other leading specialists, The Body Keeps the Score offers proven alternatives to drugs and talk therapy—and a way to reclaim lives.

This felt incredibly validating.

DNF at 32%. I find it to be dragged out and very centered around men and war. Some things NEED to be put in perspective. As a psychologist, hearing about them using the Rorschach test to determine a patient's state is shocking. At the very least, there has to be a comment that nowadays, this is a debunked method.

“… if we feel abandoned, worthless or invisible, nothing seems to matter. Fear destroys curiosity, and playfulness. In order to have a healthy society, we must raise children who can safely play and learn. They can be no growth without curiosity and no adaptability without being able to explore, through trial and error, who you are, and what matters to you. Currently more than 50% of the children served by Head Start has had three or more adverse childhood experiences like those included in the ACE study: incarcerated, family members, depression, violence, abuse, or drug use in the home or periods of homelessness. People who feel safe and meaningfully connected with others, have little reason to squander their lives doing drunks or staring number at television; they don’t feel compelled to stop them self with carbohydrates or assault their fellow human beings. However, if nothing, they do things to make a difference if you’re trapped and become susceptible to the lure of pills, gang leaders, extremist religions, violent, political movements - anybody and anything that promises relief. Is that ACE start? It has shown child abuse and neglect is the single most preventable cause of mental illness, the single, most common cause of truck and alcohol abuse, and a significant contributor to leading causes of death, such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, stroke, and suicide.” If only….

I found this book absolutely fascinating, engaging and thought-provoking. It is also the first ever book to prompt me to buy sticky notes so that I can revisit certain phrases, paragraphs and chapters. Highly recommend it.
