The New York Times bestselling series!

“Maximum suspense, unusual magic—a whole new, thrilling approach to fantasy!”
—Tamora Pierce, #1 New York Times bestselling author

Powerful magic. A deadly legacy. A world at the edge of war. Prepare to be spellbound by fantasy series, The Black Witch Chronicles.

Elloren Gardner is the spitting image of her grandmother, who drove back the enemy forces in the last Realm War. But while her people believe she will follow in her grandmother's footsteps and become the next Black Witch of prophecy, Elloren is devoid of power in a society that prizes magical ability above all else.

When she is granted the opportunity to pursue her dream of becoming an apothecary, Elloren joins her brothers at Verpax University. But she soon realizes that the university may be the most treacherous place of all for the granddaughter of the Black Witch.

As evil looms and the pressure to live up to her heritage builds, Elloren's best hope of survival may be among a secret band of rebels…if only she can find the courage to trust those she’s been taught to fear.

Critics are raving about Laurie Forest’s incredible debut, The Black Witch:

Living rent free in my mind and can’t wait to read the next book

We start off normal and traditional enough, with our FMC living a secluded and quiet life but probably harnessing immense powers that she doesn’t know about and a legacy she has to live up to. When she is finally pushed into the “real” hard world, in her case university for apothecary, she is faced with people’s expectations and assumptions about her and her legacy. The university is a place for all sorts of people, races and cultures that obviously doesn’t go without clashing. The FMC’s culture feels very superior towards other races deemed not even human and acts accordingly, with a history of feeling surprised oppressed and now on the way to their rightful place in the world. While world politics then the life’s of other races upside down, the FMC feels the brunt of her legacy in something I cannot call any different than bullying. But through it all, she learns. About other cultures and customs, about history and perspectives, about individual vs group identities. I loved reading about her growth and opening her mind to other perspectives. The background story feels very much like something we as society have experienced in the past and are currently repeating. It’s a story about otherness and learning new foreign things, it’s a story about friendship and growth, of leaving stereotypes and fear of otherness. It is a story about small acts of kindness and great acts of revolution - or the other way around.

Good Fantasy. At the beginning I didn't like Elloren too much, she was way to naive and kinda annoying with her prejudices. But I was still very curious what would happen.

DNF at 20% I thought this book would be more fantasy political intrigue, and the beginning of the book, which was full of establishing interesting backstory for the main character and her family as well as some side characters that has influence on or gets influenced by the fantasy political of this fictional realm, read like this as well. But as soon as the character arrives in the town she's meant to go to university it all feels like it gets thrown away for some cheap drama and everything is about "wandfasting", the marriage tradition in this fantasy world, and after three chapters of everything being more or less about this marriage stuff in a way that is seriously old-timey and superficial and distracting from what actually interests me in this story, I've now had enough. There's plenty of good stories utilising these kinds of types of misogynistic marriage traditions in an interesting way, but this is not that. I will not continue.

Absolutely outstanding. I love this book.

I love this book, I love this series! Second time reading it, and it's still as good, if not better than the first time. The richness (and history!) of this fantastical world and especially Elloren's character development make it a more than worthwhile read. Looking forward to rereading book 2 and then continue on to the unknown territory of book 3 and 4
