#part of my nostalgia-teenage-years-better-than-they-ever-wore-with-so-much-more-fascinating-mystery-stuff-and-hot-and-incredibly-hot-young-people Whenever I need some fluff and bright-colored escapism or reality hit too hard recently I read this book series. The plot keeps you reading, it is not annoying but simple fun.
MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS USAI received an ARC of this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Also included in this wonderful package I was sent was a personal note from Sara Shepard herself which had me scream so loud my neighbors probably thought someone was just about to murder me but whatsoever, if you receive a personal note from one of your favorite authors, you are allowed to freak out a little right? In The Amateurs Helena Kelly disappears and even after so many years and after her body was found dead only a couple of months ago her little sister Aerin still wants to know what happened, how she died, who did this to her and why. Seneca, Maddy and Brett, three “amateur detectives” are determined to find out more about Helena’s case. Strangers become friends in the challenge of discovering Helena’s murder. But what if they found out the truth? Will that ever be enough? Will that help Aerin to finally move on with her life? Sara Shepard for sure has created another exciting story in the first installment of her new The Amateurs series and I couldn’t be more excited to find out what happens next because even though it seems like they solved the case I have a feeling that there’s still something out there they don’t know – something we all don’t know and – as it’s common in Sara’s books – the epilogue promises a lot more action and mysteries to solve. I am a huge fan von Sara Shepard’s Pretty Little Liars series and one thing I love some much about Sara’s books is all the mystery. It always feels like going on a scavenger hunt, just a little more bloody and dangerous than the ones we went on in kindergarten or Junior High. I know many complain that there are too many books in the PLL series but honestly? I couldn’t get enough of it and I still can’t and for those who have finished the PLL series already and are just as obsessed with it as I am will love The Amateurs for sure. The Amateurs was such a fast-pace read with beautiful writing. Even though Sara switches between characters in each chapter it wasn’t confusing – not at all. It was soo easy to follow the story. The switching between characters was such a good and nice way to get to know all the characters. It actually felt like being part of the story. The book and the characters are so diverse – what I really really loved because there aren’t enough diverse books out there. We have Seneca, who’s intelligent but also a little awkward with a fascinating past. Throughout the story we learn more about her, her past, what happened, why she is who she is – Sara feeds her story to us slowly, always giving us just enough to turn to the next page to find out more; to see what happens next and what this is all about. As for Aerin - I have to admit I didn’t like her that much at the beginning of the story. She seemed bigheaded and like someone who doesn’t care about anything but herself but as you go on reading you find out more about her and you realize that she’s only still that little girl she used to be when her sister disappeared. She is scared and hurt and she’s only trying to cope with what happened. Aerin definitely became one of my favorite characters from the book. She’s such a fascinating character. It was so nice to see how the wall she tried to hold up, started crumbling with every day she spent with her new found friends. I also liked Brett though. Even though I was kind of skeptical at the beginning of the book I learned to like him throughout the story. He was fun to be around but also very nosy which had me thinking that maybe he wasn’t who he pretended to be. The romance was believable and in the right place. I was soo rooting for the characters to get together. I really hope there will be more romance in the following books because I really really love Seneca and Maddy. I think I fell a little in love with Maddy, he’s such a great character, I love the way he thinks, the way he talks – okay well, he might have acted like a jerk that one time but at least he was honest and that’s very important if you want to built up an relationship right? I also loved all the hidden connections between the characters. Sara is an expert when it comes to conspiracies. I’ve recently became very very obsessed with How To Get Away With Murder and this book arrived just in the perfect time. The book is so thrilling and always so exciting and I love it when it gets a little bloody, mysterious and dangerous. And this book is just the perfect mixture of all of this. And I can’t even tell you how much I love it when a book still manages to surprises me. I really didn’t see anything of this coming. Finishing the book I just sat there with my mouth open asking myself what I missed while reading the book. Sara dropped so many hints but they were all so well hidden – the ending was so great and satisfying and first and foremost it was so much fun to read the book. What I really loved so much about this book is that Sara did such a great job of making it seem like so many different people were guilty – or not. I felt like a detective myself, or like one of Annalise Keating’s students haha trying to figure out what happened and trying to find the real murderer. I couldn’t get enough of the book; I just couldn’t put it down. I really don’t want to give away any spoilers so I’m just going to end my review here. I can highly recommend this book, especially if you’ve been a fan of Sara’s Pretty Little Liars series and crime TV shows or whatever. This book is really really good and I am beyond excited for the next one. Thank you so much for sending me this. You made me the happiest girl on earth.
