Beschreibung

Amoral, cunning, ruthless, and instructive, this multi-million-copy New York Times bestseller is the definitive manual for anyone interested in gaining, observing, or defending against ultimate control – from the author of The Laws of Human Nature.

In the book that People magazine proclaimed “beguiling” and “fascinating,” Robert Greene and Joost Elffers have distilled three thousand years of the history of power into 48 essential laws by drawing from the philosophies of Machiavelli, Sun Tzu, and Carl Von Clausewitz and also from the lives of figures ranging from Henry Kissinger to P.T. Barnum.

Some laws teach the need for prudence (“Law 1: Never Outshine the Master”), others teach the value of confidence (“Law 28: Enter Action with Boldness”), and many recommend absolute self-preservation (“Law 15: Crush Your Enemy Totally”). Every law, though, has one thing in common: an interest in total domination. In a bold and arresting two-color package, The 48 Laws of Power is ideal whether your aim is conquest, self-defense, or simply to understand the rules of the game.

Reductionistic and self-obsessed

To be honest, I don't really know what to make of this book. I expected an analysis of power and what makes people in positions of power powerful. Instead it reads like a guideline how to become a sociopath and not even a clear one at that. The 'laws' contradict each other more often than not and I personally feel a little offended how much assumption are made about the reader who of course wants to be above everyone and everthing. :') I mean, fair enough, maybe I am not part of the usual audience, I don't even like self-help books but still the 'Positions of power' which are discussed seem to cover a really slim margin of powerful people. To me, the book mostly concerns itself with political power and/or social manipulation and most examples and quotes stem from old warfare. It's also clear that the book is slightly outdated because I can not remember reading a single line about one woman in power or an attempt to characterize the strategy of a powerful female figure in history. I don't know, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe someone else will like the book better for knowing what it might have in store...

For the cunning and outdated

Impressive collection of rules to gain what you want by having others play into your own hands. Most of the rules downside? Total loss of control and dire consequences too far down the line. I appreciate all the references to a world which is no longer applicable to ours. The modern world of rapid information trading is one in which errors of behavior can spread rapidly and the upsides described here are dwarved by the downsides. This book is even less relevant than sun tzu's guide. It is not history but a collection of rules accumulated by one with interest in history. Only few rules could be adopted and most fall in line with the way i live my life: Be cooperative, solution seeking and efficient. Bending the rules but doing no harm is not a sentence you could affix to many of these rules. A book for the cunning, not to say for individuals i have no respect for and have no desire to meet, less become.
