A moving middle-grade debut for anyone who's ever felt like they don't belong

Brian has always been anxious, whether at home, or in class, or on the basketball court. His dad tries to get him to stand up for himself and his mom helps as much as she can, but after he and his brother are placed in foster care, Brian starts having panic attacks. And he doesn't know if things will ever be normal again . . . Ezra's always been popular. He's friends with most of the kids on his basketball team, even Brian, who usually keeps to himself. But now, some of his friends have been acting differently, and Brian seems to be pulling away. Ezra wants to help, but he worries if he's too nice to Brian, his friends will realize that he has a crush on him . . .
But when Brian and his brother run away, Ezra has no choice but to take the leap and reach out. Both boys have to decide if they're willing to risk sharing parts of themselves they'd rather hide. But if they can be brave, they might just find the best in themselves and each other.

This book seems a bit more realistic than just a book for kids. The father has suddenly gone missing because he has someone or something he is hiding from. The mom has a sucical reaction to this, leaving two sons to fend for themselves. I wasn't expecting this dramatic of a book. I actually got concerned about what will happen to this family. I guess the author did his job of pulling me into his story. There is a higher level of human insight in the characters and situations shown here than in other books, including those written for adults. The older of the boys refuses to be seen as one of the "poor unfortunate children of criminals," as he deals with foster families, police officers and caring for his brother. He has a friend at school. This friend could help, but he is secretly dealing with being gay and it's a full time job. "A piece of my heart turned to stone, fell out of my chest, and rolled under the couch," the friend feels when he realizes he might not be accepted by the boys he hangs out with after a gay joke is made. The point of view of the book is split between these 2 boys. Watching the characters deal with their weaknesses/imperfections made the book relatable. I liked the book. I'm just not sure if it gets 4 or 5 stars. It's not my favorite book ever and I don't think it's perfect, but I'll give it 4.5 stars because it was very enjoyable and worth reading.
