Wow. I still can't believe that I finished this book... First of all: I was really interested in reading a book with a special "Sons of Anarchy" vibe which is the reason why I gave this series a shot. But after reading 40 percent of the book I couldn't stop rolling my eyes and after 70 percent of the book I was at the edge to DNF it and move on with my life. But now that I finished it I can't ignore that this book has a lot of issues which need to be addressed, because some authors keep doing the same mistakes over and over again. It is okay to create a flawed character and it is okay that the character makes mistakes. But it's not acceptable to romanticise murder, slut-shaming and toxic relationships in a book which is aimed to be read by a young adult audience. My thoughts on the plot: 1. I get it. Bikers drink, curse and sleep around. But couldn't the author go more in depth about the business deals, relationships to the other gangs (ex. Mexicans, Russians...) or anything about the Hangmen club itself? The whole plot dealt with a stupid love triangle. As a reader you didn't get what has been promised to you. 2. I enjoyed that the protagonists struggled with something in their lives (ex. disability and sexual abuse), but the author decided to execute it very poorly (ex. Styx can't speak properly to his club members and used to have speech therapy, but only Mae's love can help him to speak again...No further comment needed. Another example: Styx and Mae's first time being intimate starts with her going through the trauma of her sexual abuse. Styx's reaction to that is to leave her alone and start to make out with another women just to satisfy his own needs.) Thoughts on the main characters (Styx/River and Mae): (SPOILER ALERT!!!!) At the end of the book it said that the author likes to write about strong female characters and alpha males - both things she managed to do in the worst way 1. Mae as a strong female character? Uhm, none existing. After being physically and mentally abused by male cult members for over a decade she gets the chance to live a life in freedom. But our "strong" female main character just decides to trust a random guy who she met as an 8-year old once and comes to the conclusion that she is destined to be with him...Doesn't make any sense, right? 2. Mae's decision to stay with Styx who enjoys killing people shows how naive she is (ex. Styx kills and tortures his prospect, a boy accused of being a rat/snitch although he's innocent). She never questions any of his actions or rules although she sticks to her christian believe. Styx's violent behaviour towards every male protagonist in this book and the fact that neither Mae or his members interfers made me speechless. In the end she just got herself out of a toxic enviroment into another toxic relationship. Why's it a toxic relationship between these two? Besides hanging out with members at the club house and working in the biker shop (Styx tells her when she has to leave and picks her up every single time), she does not make any intentions to educate herself about the world outside the biker gang. Styx, our male character, does a great job to isolate her from everything and everybody except himself. 3. Styx is just the worst alpha male character and love interest. Why? When he mets Mae as a teenager he realizes something is wrong with her. Styx decides to kiss her although he notices that Mae is traumatised. Later in the story you'll find out that she was raped that night for the first time which makes Styx behaviour even more creepy. Styx/River's only mission in life is to sleep around as much as possible. He does not feel any remorse about him killing people at all (no inner conflict). He treats women like shit and he does not care at all (ex. Lois, his on-off girl at the club, is always referred as a bitch but after she gets murdered everybody including Styx is feeling sad about her death. Uh, yeah, sure...) After reuniting with Mae, Styx becomes more of a possessive, jealous alpha male who can't stop thinking about how hot Mae is and that he wants to sleep with her (I stopped counting how many times he referred to Mae as his "property"/that he owns her. Sorry, but this is not cute nore romantic that he "protects" her. It's disgusting and unhealthy. Period. The only character I'm still interested in is Flame. I might give his story in the series a shot, but definetly not after reading this book.
