Unglaublich faszinierendes Buch – bis auf das Ende
Kennt ihr das, wenn man eine komplett andere Vorstellung von einem Buch hat und dann aber nicht enttäuscht, sondern eher überrascht ist? So ging es mir mit Strange Sally Diamond. Das Buch hat mich regelrecht reingezogen, ich fand Sallys Charakter unglaublich erfrischend und sympathisch. Allerdings schlägt die anfangs leicht schräge Geschichte schnell um und das Buch bekommt plötzlich einen fast schon thrillerartigen Beigeschmack. Der Inhalt ist beklemmend, aber dennoch so gut nachvollziehbar, weil Liz Nugent wahnsinnig viel Augenmerk auf die Entwicklung der Hauptcharaktere legt – bis zu den letzten 20 Seiten. Dann musste auf einmal (warum auch immer) alles ganz schnell gehen und das Buch verliert für mich damit die Tiefe, die es vorher aufgebaut hat. Und das Ende? Puh. Für mich ziemlich unbefriedigend.
Witty crime novel with a fascinating main character
Sally Diamond is a peculiar but lovely 42-year-old who has a tendency to take things literally. After her beloved father‘s death, she puts him out with the rubbish as he once said. This triggers a cascade of events that lead Sally to investigate the roots of her oddity... I don’t want to reveal more about the plot than what’s on the blurb, as this would take away a lot of momentum from the story. I recommend not reading more than this about the book beforehand. The plot was shockingly dark, but tense and exciting. I enjoyed every single page. Sally as the main character is absolutely unique. The only downside was the ending, which felt a bit weak…but despite that, this won‘t be my last read by Liz Nugent!

Sally Diamond, aged 43, hits the headlines when her father dies and she does exactly what he had asked her to do - put him out with the bins. Put into the spotlight against her will, she is forced to put an end to her accustomed solitude and start socialising whilst slowly uncovering her mysterious past. With her tendency to take things literally and openly speak her mind, Sally’s characteristics as well as the writing style reminded me of Gail Honeyman’s “Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine” at first. “I often offend people without meaning to, because I say what I think.” While the book starts out as another enjoyable novel featuring a quirky character, it quickly turns into a crime novel that I found to be unputdownable. It is dark, twisted and even funny at times. Without giving too much away, Liz Nugent lets the reader know more of the background story than Sally which leads to a lot of guessing and wondering how everything will turn out in the end. To make the most out of it, I recommend going into this book as clueless as possible.

— Ich bin relativ unwissend in die Handlung gestiegen, denn der Klappentext gibt tatsächlich nicht viel her von der Story. Sollte euch das Buch ansprechen, empfehle ich euch ebenfalls blind in die Geschichte einzutauchen und einfach zulassen, dass das Buch euch schockt. ⠀ — Für die erste Hälfte des Buches würde ich glatt 5 Sterne vergeben. Das Buch startet brisant und nimmt einem von Kapitel zu Kapitel einfach immer mehr den Atem. Es handelt sich hierbei um einen Thriller und OUCH der ist echt nicht ohne! 🌲 ⠀ — Leider konnte mich das Gesamtwerk nicht überzeugen. Ohne zu spoilern, es war mir irgendwann einfach too much. Die Autorin hat meiner Meinung nach versucht zu viel auf einmal unterzubringen. Zu viele Horror Tropes, teilweise sollte es auch lustig und ein wenig politisch sein. ☕️ ⠀ — Ich glaube trotzdem, dass dies ein Geheimtipp für Thriller Fans sein könnte. Die Handlung ist originel umgesetzt und ein richtiger Schoker. Der Schreibstil top und ich werde mir weitere Werke der Autorin ansehen. 📖 Bewertung: 3,5 / 5 ✨️

Mit einem guten Gespür für Tempo erzählt die Autorin eine faszinierende Geschichte über viele schockierende Abgründe in einer ganz besonderen Familie. Ich finde es sehr lesenswert und konnte besonders der Auflösung viel abgewinnen.
Easy read, unsure if I liked the story. I finished the book in 3 days, as it is quite easy to read and the story was interesting enough. But I cannot decide how I liked it. Sometimes I thought, well this is just too easy and nice but then I found the end somehow depressing and unsatisfying. Maybe it is on purpose, as the subject in itself is very depressing and troubling.
