Soulless was picked as the book for hour book club but I've been wanting to read it for some time before that. It starts out exciting but sometimes the book got really boring and I have to admit that I didn't understand all the British words. But I loved them anyway. The love story was more fun than the crime story, especially since I've figured out one of the culprits when he was introduced so that definitely took out some of the surprise. Alexia Tarabotti was a strong female character and I enjoyed reading about her. I don't know why it was necessary to mention so often that she's part Italian but oh well.
Paranormal 19th century meets steampunk
Set in the 19th century with creatures of myth and steampunk elements, this story is an adventure you can really dive into. The descriptions of behavior and fashion pull you right into the aristocratic society of London while scientific developement enriches the plot and makes it more modern. The female lead breaks with all stereotypes and ideals of that time which is kinda cliché in itself but makes for a really sympathic protagonist. After I got used to it linguistically I enjoyed it a lot.
This is pretty much mindless fun done well. I normally don't like chick lit. Hate to love relationships and sexual attraction as main reasons for marriage bother me a lot in other books but I didn't care here. I enjoyed it and really flew through it. I only wished the focus was more on the mystery than on romance but for what it is it worked perfectly. Everything that bothers me in other stories works well in the context of this one since the characters actions are believable and the whole thing is not to be taken 100% serious. There are a lot of funny lines and the writing style fit the period it was set in. It reminded me kind of of Janet Evanovich's books on Stephanie Plum, so if you enjoyed those and are willing to suspend your disbelief concerning a wild mix of subgenres (steampunk, fantasy...) give this a try. I liked it as much as I will ever like a romantasy novel.
The Parasol Protectorate. A book series close to my heart, haha! I ordered the whole bunch at once out of curiosity a while back and got hooked immediately (don't be scared by the slightly cheap-looking covers!). If you are into a steampunk-fantasy-historical-romance mix, this is the thing for you. The plot takes place in Victorian steampunk-London, with vampires and werewolves as recognized parts of society. The main character, Miss Alexa Tarabotti, has an Austen-ish humour, charme and wit about her, and having her quarrel with Lord Maccon is, to stay within the spirit of the series, delightful. ;) so this is indeed my go-to series whenever I feel like reading an easy and charming romance/adventure again.

Schwule Vampire, Werwölfe, verrückte Hüte und jede Menge Tee. Bei Soulless bekommt man alles andere als den üblichen Fantasy Kram. Da hätten wir zum einen die Hauptfigur Alexia Tarabotti, die am Anfang von einem Vampir angegriffen wird - ohne einander vorgestellt zu werden. Nicht mal ihre Treacle Tart konnte sie in Ruhe essen, für die sie sich auf einem Ball extra in die Bibliothek zurückgezogen hat. Und dann wäre da noch Lord Maccon, Werwolfalpha und Leiter der Paranormalen Angelegenheiten, der zugleich zur Stelle ist, als ebenjener Vampir durch Alexia "ums Leben kommt". Und genau bei diesem Vorfall fängt das Abenteuer an, denn da Alexia nicht auf den Mund gefallen ist, kann man sich auf so einiges gefasst machen.Es gibt Werwölfe und Vampire, warum unterscheidet sich dieses Buch nun von all den anderen?Zum Einen ist es mit sehr viel Humor und Ironie geschrieben, ja, es macht sich geradezu lustig über Vampire - wo sonst gibt es neu verwandelte Vampire, die wegen ihrer Eckzähne lispeln? Zum Anderen liest sich Gail Carriger's Schreibstil einfach wunderbar, es gibt so gut wie keine langatmigen Stellen und die Charaktere sind interessant und anders.Bemängeln könnte man höchstens, dass die Steampunk Elemente etwas zu kurz kommen. Hier und da wird etwas erwähnt, aber wirklich im Vordergrund steht dies nicht.Insgesamt kann ich dieses Buch jedoch nur empfehlen, ich habe mich keine Minute gelangweilt und es hat einfach Spaß gemacht, es zu lesen.Daher gibt es auch die volle Punktzahl von mir. "Goodness gracious me," exclaimed Alexia, "what are you wearing? It looks like the unfortunate progeny of an illicit union between a pair of binoculars and some opera glasses. What on earth are they called, binocticals, spectoculars?"Ich habe vorhin gesehen, dass die deutsche Ausgabe "Glühende Dunkelheit" heißen wird. Ich glaube das ist so ziemlich der dämlichste Name auf den sie kommen konnten...
Ok, I did it ... and in the end it was ok. I HATED the first 110 pages, I thought I could never finish this book. Then they forgot about the story and for the next more than 100 pages it was just a love story. Not the best one I've ever read of course but it made the book quite more enjoyable for me. I was a bit sad when the story moved forward and from page 217 'til 254 it was just blah again ... but then I was suprised that I actually liked the finale of the book, it even became a tiny bit exciting though most of the story was quite obvious right from the beginning (Lord Maccon and Alexia .... or Mr. MacDougall's part). I feel no desire at all to read "Changeless" but I'm glad the book got better in the end.
