This book was my first book after a long reading slump (13 years), and once I started, I couldn't put it down. The storyline and dividing of the chapters with chapters in Evelyn's life is just beautiful. And don't get me started with the end.
Dieses Buch hat mich vollkommend fasziniert.
Wow. Was für eine Geschichte. Evelyn Hugo bittet Monique Grant darum eine Biografie über sie zu schreiben. Denn Evelyn ist eine der bekanntesten Hollywood Stars aus den 50ern, 60ern, 70ern und 80ern. Doch was Evelyn dafür alles tun musste, hat sie bis dato noch nie erzählt. Es geht um die Liebe, das Leben und ihre Sexualität. Es geht darum wie man mit Hoffnung, Egoismus, Selbstvertrauen und Kampfgeist als Frau in den 50ern den Durchbruch schaffen konnte und sich das Recht ein Star zu sein in einer ,,Männerwelt" verdienen musste. Dieses Buch hat mich wirklich überrascht und absolut fasziniert. Es ist eins meiner Highlights geworden und ich empfehle es jedem es einmal zu lesen.
Unglaubliches buch. Es hat nichts von dem, was ich in Büchern eig suche, aber ich konnte es nicht weglegen. Absolut fesselnd geschrieben und mit evelyn als Erzählerin, bei der man nicht weiß, was man von ihr halten soll. Ich kann nur empfelen es zu lesen. Es ist zeitweise witzig, ich habe jedoch das letzte drittel gelesen während meine tränen auf meinem gesicht getrocknet sind.
Ein wundervolles Buch!
Ich bin absolut ohne Erwartungen an das Buch rangegangen, weil ich keine Ahnung hatte, worum es eigentlich ging. Nur gelesen wegen des Hypes. Und es ist den Hype wert!!
"Please never forget that the sun rises and sets with your smile. At least to me it does. You’re the only thing on this planet worth worshipping." This is a pure 5 star book for me, it's spectacular. The pace of this story was so incredibly fast that I couldn't put it down. The writing was flawless, precise and focused, there weren't any redundant descriptions of places or rooms only faces and clothes which kept me enthralled in the story. It was obvious that TJR has done a lot of research, everything was on point. Evelyn Hugo's character was so well crafted that it really felt like reading someone's biography. Sometimes I would think I'll watch this movie of her later, only to remember that she never existed. She is devious, ruthless, raw and often cold hearted. But you can't help yourself and still like her. She is sensual and seductive and she uses that to her advantage. She will do anything to climb the ladder and she isn't ashamed about that. She will even go on to marry seven men who will serve her purpose. But we also see her sensitive side, how deeply she cares for Harry, how she loves her child and how she is devoted to Celia. With two biracial main characters, one bisexual, one lesbian and one gay main character this book also has the best representation I ever read, especially in historical fiction! We get to see the struggles that POC and gay people faced in a time like this. This book has so many layers and all of them are well thought through and meaningful.
