Where should I start? I didn't read the reviews of the book on here until I was more than halfway through. And I'm glad I did. The reviews here probably would have put me off so much that I wouldn't have bought it. But fortunately, I went a different route with this book. It's the first book in a long time that made me laugh, smile, as well as grin. I really enjoyed the lightheartedness with which the growing relationship of Jo and Emma was approached. The book is one of my favs so far this year. Don't judge me
I had a hard time getting into this book but it was meh overall. The characters felt like teenagers despite their actual age and I just didn’t vibe with it. But the writing is so good !!
I started out really enjoying this book, but somewhere along the way the story lost me, and I lost the characters; probably around the point I realized we were never really going to learn anything about them. Honestly, this is what I can tell you: Jo is a Chinese-American former actor, now famous show writer in her early 40s, a lesbian, and somehow has a reputation of being fierce/cold/whatever, but we never get so see much of that. Emma is her personal assistant, Jewish, bisexual, in her late 20s and... has a sister who owns a bakery? Considering this, it's not surprising I didn't really see, let alone feel the romance, either. And it's not like I don't love slow burns and lots of pining and even a good miscommunication, I do, but this felt more like a no burn. And so did the rest of the story: When Jo invites Emma to accompany her to an award show, the press unsurprisingly takes a picture of them and immediately decides they're now dating, and so the rumours start - and get worse when someone inside their company decides to leak more information about them. And I really like the idea of that, but it felt much more like a plot device that gets mentioned when it's convenient, but then never leads to anything. Especially the leak. I don't even mind that it was pretty obvious from the start who it was, I actually kind of expect this from a story like this, but despite Emma saying he's her best friend on set, the only times I remember them even talking, Phil was pretty much an asshole towards her, so what should have felt like a huge betrayal just was this "oh, okay" moment, and it never became a big deal. What annoyed me the most, though, was the "conflict" in the middle of the book. Basically, Jo and Emma's sister start meeting at the baseball games of their respective nephew and kids, and don't tell Emma about this for a while. And look, I am saying this as someone who feels left out very quickly and thus also would have felt irrationally hurt at first, but Jo not only directly asks her what's wrong but also apologizes when she eventually finds out what's bothering her, and Emma is still acting like a total brat for what feels forever. Anyways, at least this part showed me that maybe I have been overreacting in some personal situations recently as well (which was also the only thing that kept me reading through this part), so it was at least good for something. Anyways², I think the characters just didn't work for me, neither alone nor together nor in the context of this story, but there were some ideas I really liked, so I hope the author will write more romances about queer women.

Slowest of slow burns.
