“Not to be missed!” —Marissa Meyer, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Lunar Chronicles
“An explosion of emotion, intrigue, romance, and revolution.” —Stephanie Garber, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Caraval series

In the tradition of The Lunar Chronicles, this sweeping reimagining of Les Misérables tells the story of three teens from very different backgrounds who are thrown together amidst the looming threat of revolution on the French planet of Laterre.

A thief.
An officer.
A guardian.

Three strangers, one shared destiny…

When the Last Days came, the planet of Laterre promised hope. A new life for a wealthy French family and their descendants. But five hundred years later, it’s now a place where an extravagant elite class reigns supreme; where the clouds hide the stars and the poor starve in the streets; where a rebel group, long thought dead, is resurfacing.

Whispers of revolution have begun—a revolution that hinges on three unlikely heroes…

Chatine is a street-savvy thief who will do anything to escape the brutal Regime, including spy on Marcellus, the grandson of the most powerful man on the planet.

Marcellus is an officer—and the son of an infamous traitor. In training to take command of the military, Marcellus begins to doubt the government he’s vowed to serve when his father dies and leaves behind a cryptic message that only one person can read: a girl named Alouette.

Alouette is living in an underground refuge, where she guards and protects the last surviving library on the planet. But a shocking murder will bring Alouette to the surface for the first time in twelve years…and plunge Laterre into chaos.

All three have a role to play in a dangerous game of revolution—and together they will shape the future of a planet.

This manages to be a great Les Miserables retelling by drawing inspiration from the source material in an effective and loving way while also being its own thing. You need no knowledge of Les Mis whatsoever or even to like classics to enjoy this. Having read Les Mis will give away some twists but also delight you with some great nods to the original as well as the musical adaptation. The source contains elements that work really well in modern YA, like nun and thief characters and the upcoming rebellion plot. The book was exciting, made you care for the characters and had some really effectively written moments. Being set relatively late in the Les Mis story line and taking the lead from a certain character, however, made some things not work as well as they could have, e. g. the connection between Alouettes father and Lamier. It is very noticeable that the authors love the source material and they're introducing it to a whole new audience with their SciFi and YA take on it, which I think is such a wonderful thing. It was a really good read and I'm looking forward to the sequel coming out later this year.

this series better not end in Chantine dying for Marcellus like Eponine did for Marius, I'd be mad af
