Devney Perry wurde in Montana, USA, geboren und ist dort aufgewachsen. Sie arbeitete zehn Jahre lang in der Tech-Industrie, bevor sie begann sich dem Schreiben zu widmen. Und das sehr erfolgreich – mit ihren romantischen Geschichten, die meist in der atemberaubenden Landschaft Montanas angesiedelt sind, erobert sie regelmäßig die internationalen Bestsellerlisten. Mit ihrem ersten Fantasy-Roman »Shield of Sparrows« stieg sie sogar direkt auf Platz 1 der »New York Times«-Bestsellerliste ein. “Not all monsters are born from the gods, my queen. Some of us were made." This might sound a little contradictory but hear me out: I’ve read this story a thousand times and yet I still ate it up! We’ve got the misunderstood and outcast FMC that is thrown into an arranged marriage for political gain, but then goes off on an epic quest. She is captivated by a brooding, morally gray man who ends up being her fated lover. She then proceeds to make besties with his crew (aaaww for the found family), before realizing she’s an ancient magical being who could save the world. Add some beasts, dragon like things yada yada yada and then BOOM an almost happily ever after, because this is going to be a series so it can't all be well. But the magical world Denver Perry created still pulled me in and I enjoyed every moment being the romantasy simp I am. The only complaint I have are the many, many questions. The same ones over and over again. And finishing almost every thought with a "wasn't it?". Also the pacing dipped a little in the middle.

Nachdem ich ja zuletzt wegen Silver Elite so gehyped war, habe ich mich ein bisschen im englischsprachigen Bookstagram herumgetrieben und neben Silver Elite wurde da immer wieder ein weiterer Buchtitel genannt: Shield of Sparrows. Und während Silver Elite auch schon echt ganz cool war muss ich jetzt sagen: ich war einfach wirklich nicht bereit für das hier. Ich hab schon lange kein Buch mehr gelesen, dass mich so krass gefangen hat, wie dieses. Also neben Fourth Wing und Throne of Glass ist das hier jetzt definitiv ganz weit oben auf meiner Liste und ein absolutes Highlight! Odessa ist Prinzessin von Quentis. Und obwohl sie die ältere Tochter ist, ist es eigentlich an ihrer Schwester Mae, einen alten Pakt zu erfüllen und den Prinzen von Turah zu heiraten. Doch plötzlich kommt alles ganz anders und sie ist quasi über Nacht verheiratet und befindet sich auf einem Schiff auf dem Weg in das Königreich, dessen Königin sie nun einmal werden soll. Es gibt Magie, es gibt Monster, eine wirklich toll erzählte Welt. Dann ist da plötzlich eine Seuche, es wird gelogen und betrogen. Und in alldem ist Odessa eine taffe Protagonistin, die dafür kämpft, über ihr eigenes Leben bestimmen zu dürfen. Dazu kommt eine Slow-Burn-Liebesgeschichte, einige Plottwists, die ich wirklich nicht habe kommen sehen und das alles unglaublich packend erzählt. Ich konnte das Buch kaum aus der Hand legen, habe mitgefiebert, die ein oder andere Träne verdrückt und weiß jetzt schon, dass ich UNBEDINGT den nächsten Band brauche! Ein tolles Leseerlebnis und ich freue mich auch hier schon auf den Re-Read, sobald das Buch auf Deutsch erschienen ist. Das wird sicherlich eins, dass trotz des wenigen Platzes im Regal im Farbschnitt hier einziehen darf. Lest dieses Buch!!
I really liked this one! In a world of fantasy books I could not believe how unique the tone in this book was. Really great characters. Mean cliffhanger. Perfect
Puhhh… schwierig. Die ersten 300 Seiten waren schleppend aber danach.. wow. Bin auf den nächsten Teil gespannt… 💔🫣
A not overhyped but habe me all the feels nonetheless.
I had a good time reading this book. It was a great start to the series and even though I smelled that plot twist coming from early on - I liked it either way. Till 50% in it feels very much like a prologue - a lot description and not a lot of character growth but I had a good time anyway. The world is unique and promises some nice twists and turns in the next books - loved that. The MMC is everything we love in a book boyfriend! I loved their dynamic and the slow burn. The FMC will be a badass in the next books, I reckon. I like her very much and hope she gets more active in the next books. I liked the tropes and the side characters and also hope we get more soon. Even though there were times I was like - oh common - another description - another HUGE inner monologue, I was never tired of it. This is really just the beginning and it gave me all the feelings i want, when reading a Romantasy. The spice is a little PG and when they get it on it’s all very fast and suddenly - “woho, after two min I am happy” but it’s ok with room to improvement. I think this has the potential to be really good. Is it a masterpiece ? No. Does it make you feel and eating up the pages ? Yes. I can recommend but I think it’s a tiny bit overhyped.

It was a new story that I haven't read many times before. Even though I anticipated some of the twists, it was still gripping throughout. I love the characters and especially the tension between the two main characters. I can hardly wait for the second part. I'm excited to see what happens next.
