After this being hyped up so much (as one of the best-written sci-fi/fantasy stories out there), i can't help but feel disappointment. First off, wtf is up with the women in this book. Severian lusts after every single one. Sure, they're not one-dimensional, but this was still lame to read. Secondly, the world building and creativity and prose were great at times. But it also feels meandering and very convenient the way that people and events just pop up. i'll have a look at claw too, but i wasn't overly impressed by this.

3/5 This is one of those books that you can’t fully grasp at a first read. Confusion, the lack of understanding and the constant feeling of missing huge parts of it is meant as one of the central concepts and appeals of stories such as these. I am no stranger or objector to this since I have read and mostly enjoyed a huge chunk of the Malazan Book of the Fallen, the fantasy series that is most notorious for this approach of storytelling. The Shadow of the Torturer is a coming of age story told from a first person perspective. We follow a young torturer in his apprenticeship. He starts out young and we follow him for a couple of years that are told in a few pages. At some point the time frame it takes place in slows down and some weird stuff starts happening. There's a LOT of subtext in this book. The narrator clearly doesn’t tell you everything and that’s kind of the main selling point I felt like. However, the weird stuff that started taking place about half way through I found quite annoying and boring at times which is why, after the beginning really intrigued me, I quickly lost interest. The ending was fine again though. I feel kinda bad for rating this not as high as it probably deserves since the general consensus about this book seems to be to read the whole series first before judging it, because being in the dark and confused about the story is kind of the point of it in the beginning. I might still continue this, especially since the books in this series are really short for a work of fantasy. I also really enjoyed the mystery of the world and I feel like a lot of excellent worldbuilding is yet to come.
