This mind-blowing novel by Z. Livaneli is one of my favorites of all times. Based on very well-researched facts around the heart-ripping disaster of the ship Struma, carrying 800 Jewish refugees from Eastern Europe to today´s Israel, Livaneli puts together an interwoven story on love with implications and reflections of the past in a country that resembles a population of multi-cultural heritage creating its own identity. What fascinates me is that he is able to interweave complex incidents into a smooth-reading, fine-tasting novel that accompanies one throughout lives with its silky and long-lasting finish (I know, it sounds like I am describing a fine bottle of red-wine here, which is not a too bad of a metaphor when I think of it now :)).
