“Remarkably Bright Creatures is a beautiful examination of how loneliness can be transformed, cracked open, with the slightest touch from another living thing.” -- Kevin Wilson, author of Nothing to See Here
For fans of A Man Called Ove, a charming, witty and compulsively readable exploration of friendship, reckoning, and hope that traces a widow's unlikely connection with a giant Pacific octopus
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago.
Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.
Ever the detective, Marcellus deduces what happened the night Tova’s son disappeared. And now Marcellus must use every trick his old invertebrate body can muster to unearth the truth for her before it’s too late.
Shelby Van Pelt’s debut novel is a gentle reminder that sometimes taking a hard look at the past can help uncover a future that once felt impossible.

Remarkably bright creatures indeed.

A slow unfolding story at first that picks up the pace rather quickly. Tova's persona is remarkably calming and exerts a sense of peacefulness onto every conversation which i very much enjoyed. The friendships explored in this book are fantastic and the turn of events makes you hold your breath. I loved it. Thank you!

*3,5 Charming read, but took me a while to get into it. I would have loved to have more chapters from Marcellus' perspective. I felt a lot like cleaning during reading the book :p

Loved it. Started a little slow but the way it was all tied together was really beautiful.

3.5⭐ What a cute and heartwarming story. It took me a longer time than I expected to finish this book but that was just because I listened to the audiobook and those usually take me a bit longer. So it had nothing with the story which I thought was really good. The reason I picked this book up is because the premise is so unique. I mean a friendship between an older woman and an octopus??? How cool is that?! And yes it was very cool, but not just that it was also soo sweet how Tova, the main character, cared for Marcellus, the octopus. What I also thought was really was that we had chapters in between were Marcellus tells us his view on the story and I liked to see how he tries to help unsolve "the mystery" out of love and friendship for Tova. I also really liked the development of the other main character Cameron and I was really happy for him at the end of the book. So was it the greatest book of all time no. But I think this is an important about family and friendship and also dealing with grief which made me like this story a lot.

My absolute favorite part of the book was Marcellus. Loved every chapter of his POV. Rest of the story was lovely, but I nothing surprising. Please remember reading is subjective.

4

Richtig schöne Geschichte über Tova und Cameron. Liest sich sehr gut und war unterhaltsam und wholesome.

3.5 ⭐️ I listened to this on Audible and tbh only got into the storyline on a second attempt, as I found the plot quite slow to start out. However, by the second half, I was very invested in the characters and each of their struggles. I loved the intricate writing and oftentimes humorous remarks and thoughts of the characters, most of all, of course, the chapters of Marcellus, the GPO
