a story making you even more empathetic to the situation of people in the world who are struck by unexplainable wars & riots.
i gasped aloud many times while reading this book; paul lynch really managed leaving an impression with his character portraits. i loved how an eerie & panicky atmosphere was created throughout the whole story, you almost felt like you're always there within the protagonist eilish, going through her troubles as well as feelings/relationships towards other characters. the only reason why i removed half a star is that you always keep up your hopes for some people but in the end, most of them aren't fulfilled. guess it shows the reality of the situation though because hoping for more positive outcomes in horrifying stories like this one is mostly naive & unrealistic.

An absolutely shattering, powerful, claustrophobic novel. It shows how quickly a society like ours could collapse and makes you ask yourself: what if this was me? You really have to face your darkest fears, you are left furious, and if the purpose is to return to the real world wanting to find a better ending for our story, it has done that for me. It leaves you with a burning empathy for people suffering through similar circumstances, people who are living through war and devastation. All this rendered in stunningly beautiful, lyrical prose that is as hypnotic as that of Cormac McCarthy. Ergo: Masterpiece. [She sees her children] damned to a world of terror, wishing for such a world to end, wishing for the world its destruction, and she looks at her infant son, this child who remains an innocent and she sees how she has fallen afoul of herself and grows aghast, seeing that out of terror comes pity and out of pity comes love and out of love the world can be redeemed again, and she can see that the world does not end, that it is vanity to think the world will end during your lifetime or in some sudden event, that what ends is your life and only your life, that what is sung by the prophets is but the same song sung across time, the coming of the sword, the world devoured by fire, the sun gone down into the earth at noon and the world cast in darkness, the fury of some god incarnate in the mouth of the prophet raging at the wickedness that will be cast out of sight, and the prophet sings not of the end of the world but of what has been done and what will be done and what is being done to some but not others, that the world is always ending over and over again in one place but not another and that the end of the world is always a local event, it comes to your country and visits your town and knocks on the door of your house and becomes to others but some distant warning, a brief report on the news, an echo of events that has passed into folklore.
wowowowow

An important book, depressing and beautiful at the same time - a reminder that freedom and peace are luxuries that should not be taken for granted. I don’t understand the criticism regarding the author’s style, I found his way of writing unique and refreshing. My criticism is that the other characters next to Eilish seem a bit pale and superficial. I did not like the end. And finally, the author’s vagueness regarding the political circumstances that set the framework for his story was a disappointing.
