Guter Slow Horror rund um Kindheit, Jungs-Freundschaft und Nostalgie. Sehr reale Charaktere, wichtiger Punkt über männliche Gewalt.
Since I finished the second chapter I cannot stop thinking about this book. It is subtle horror, yet much more effective than any gorey slasher horror I've read or seen. Honestly, the best way to read this is without knowing what you're getting into. The contrast of reading out of an innocent childs perspective and knowing as a grown up what sinister stuff is at work here is extremely unsettling. It's not annoying in the slightest. By that I mean that reading from a childs perspective I often find straining. But this is not the case here. The protagonist doesn't "ignore danger", he even knows that something is wrong. His innocent mind just cannot comprehent what the meaning behind this is. It also helps, that while the stories are from the perspective of a child, it is the grown-up protagonist telling the story. To say more would be spoilers, so go and read this masterpiece!

Actually really well written and scary. Kinda open end and really unpredictable. Every short story (they are all connected but can individually seen as short stories) ends with a scare. Eerie atmosphere throughout. Great read!
So deliciously creepy! Still got goosebumps!
I like it when the horror is more subtle yet gives you chills anyway. And I think the creepy stuff in here feels especially creepy because it's so grounded in reality. What I especially enjoyed was the discrepancy between how a child would see, interpret and remember these events and how you as an adult see and interpret these things. What scared the boy and what gives you the creeps while reading. I really enjoyed this and I'm sure it'll stay with me. I wish a german translation would exist... my mom would love this if she could read English.
nunca había leído un libro de terror que me dejara tan triste :( no sé, me gustó mucho quise leerlo por mucho tiempo, no sé qué es lo que esperaba pero ,,,, si se me salieron las lagrimas al final
Listened to the NoSleep Podcast edition of this. I remember that I read the first three stories before. These are very clearly stories written for NoSleep and lack the finesse you find in a lot of horror short stories that were written for printed publications. They all follow the same scheme: build-up in a flash back, based on something completely innocent, slowly creepy things start to happen, story reaches a creepy peak by the means of a "twist" (that you've seen coming since the fifth sentence), ends unresolved because the reader doesn't really learn what happened or why. And of course it's "true". It kinds put me off reading NoSleep because it's always the same. What annoys me the most about Penpal is that even the last story ends on some cryptic non-resolution. We never learn who or what the "stalker" was or have real a confrontation between him and the main character. Thus we never know why he decided to kill himself at the end, presenting a deus ex machina for the narrator.
I don’t get the hype. The buildup was SO slow, the writing was kind of monotone and the story lacked depths. It was 2% „creepy“ not really what I would call „one of the scariest books ever“ and 98% unnecessary descriptions of stuff. I guess it’s true that you either love or hate this book.
I really enjoyed reading the book. It was super creepy and chilling. But since it started as a reddit post, I have some issues with the way it’s written and some things doesn’t add up in the end. But still, I would love to read more stories like that.
