This one is a fun read although the story is somehow plain. Stephanie has more luck than knowledge und even the bad guys are treating her nicely... Don't expect too much, but it's an entertaining book.
Reading a Stephanie Plum book is like watching a 90s movie sequel. There is an outline, boxes to check and boom you have another. A virtual copy and paste. One for the Money is the second book of the series I have read (I own five total) and the hijinks of Miss Plum are quite consistent. There's the trademark silliness and slapstick, the getting rescued, the brewing romance, the forays into poverty, the Michael Bay explosions, the self deprecation. I can't really complain about any of this because from what I have seen people already know what they're going to get. I won't be saying anything new in this review. I wanted to read the first book to get a clue on the starting point of the major recurring characters. Janet really packs the acts here, really played like a movie to me. Just when you think it's all over there is yet another crisis. This is a comedy and it is not meant to be an absolute mirror of reality. I have read a holiday special of the series called Plum Spooky and that even has straight-up fantasy characters with supernatural powers. I also found that better than this which is unexpected. I'm giving this a 2 because I guess I expected more laughs and some differentiation in terms of how things play out. Was surprised by some brutal scenes and stuff with a harder edge. I welcome that. I guess I will continue to read the remaining books I have of the series down the road.
It took me way too long to realize this is the plot of a movie I watched 12 years ago.... Anyway, I love this, but I don't think I want to keep going with this series. 24 novels makes it easy to fall out of love with a character.
