Description

Jack Kerouac's Great American Novel, now in a delightful new Clothbound Classics editionOn the Road swings to the rhythms of 1950s underground America, jazz, sex, generosity, chill dawns and drugs, with Sal Paradise and his hero Dean Moriarty, traveller and mystic, the living epitome of Beat. Now recognized as a modern classic, its American Dream is nearer that of Walt Whitman than Scott Fitzgerald, and it goes racing towards the sunset with unforgettable exuberance, poignancy and autobiographical passion.

On the road across America

I took me a while to get through this book. And I still don't really know what to think about it or especially about the story. Often, I just had the feeling that the characters were rushing across the US. Jumping from one thing to another.. and it was hard to keep up with that... It wasn't quite the description of a road trip I expected.. but somehow, it also was? I don't know. I'm confused about it. But I enjoyed the style of writing in general. The description of the landscape.. the cities.. and the love for being on the road. I totally get it why it is a classic. Of course, some point of views of Kerouac or of "Sal" don't fit with our times and opinions now, but I guess this is an issue for many classical books. And this is something you should keep in mind while reading it.
