Das Buch erzählt die Geschichte aus der Sicht des Babys, womit ich leider nicht wirklich warm geworden bin. In manchen Situationen ist der Erzähler sehr ahnungslos, in anderen hat er fundierte Meinungen zu verschiedenen Weinsorten. Auch sonst hat sich die Geschichte für mich etwas wenig Handlung für die Seitenzahl, lässt sich aber zumindest leicht weglesen. Definitiv nicht mein liebstes Werk von McEwan.
Nutshell is told from a unique perspective: an unborn baby tells the story from its mother's womb. I'm always open for new ways of storytelling and Ian McEwan is a masterful writer whom you can rely on to give a story a most unexpected twist. But despite all this I just didn't like this book. The first thing that put me off was that the mother, a pregnant woman, was drinking and that the baby was obviously enjoying it. I had a baby not too long ago and so I couldn't have felt more appalled. Drinking during pregnancy is absolutely off-limits and I can't imagine a baby enjoying it. The other thing I didn't feel comfortable with was the way the story was told. The baby seems to know everything except for what it doesn't see and hear. I could have lived with that but not with the fact that it talks like a scholar. We don't know what is going on in an unborn baby's mind - but the thoughts this baby is having are virtually impossible. All of this repelled me so much that I wasn't able to properly concentrate on the rest of the story anymore (which actually is pretty good). It was the first time that I didn't enjoy a novel by Ian McEwan. (I received a free digital copy via Netgalley/ the publisher. Thanks for the opportunity!)
