Started strong but lost me halfway through. Cool ideas—bone dog, goblin market, possessed chicken!—but none of them were explored enough. The story felt aimless, the humor didn’t work for me, and the main character… was not the brightest. I know this book is beloved, but it just wasn’t my style.

This book was a rollercoaster—and not always in a good way. Nettle & Bone has some truly creative elements—a goblin market, a gravewitch with a demon-possessed chicken, a fairy godmother, and a dog made of bones. These are all great ideas with tons of potential. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel like the book did much with them. The storytelling felt disjointed, jumping around in time, and the pacing was uneven. The humor didn’t click for me, and I often found myself bored, especially in the second half. I also struggled with the main character—Marra felt passive and, honestly, not very sharp, which made it hard to root for her. The group she travels with never seemed to have a clear plan, and while that might have been the point, it just made the plot feel aimless. There were too many loose threads and underdeveloped aspects of the world. It all started off okay, but eventually it lost me. I know this book is widely praised, but the storytelling style wasn’t for me. If you’re looking for tight plotting and in-depth worldbuilding, this might fall short.
