My Name is Lucy Barton is one of those little books which are great and which show that a story doesn't have to be hundreds of pages long to tell a character's whole life without the reader having the feeling of missing something. The book tells the story of Lucy Barton who is in hospital with a severe illness and thinks back on her life, especially when her estranged mother visits her. Short scenes from Lucy's life are described: how she grew up in a very poor family in Illinois which was looked upon even by the other poor families in her hometown; how she suffered in her childhood but still made her way to college, moved to New York and became a published author. The book also shows how she progressed after her hospital stay and what happened to her marriage. Other authors would have needed much more room for this story and probably would have told too much and made the reading tedious. Not so Elizabeth Strout: In few words she describes the characters, doesn't even use many names, but the reader still gets a very clear image of everyone. What makes this work even more impressive are the truths of life which are mentioned and also the way Lucy looks at her life: She always knows where she came from and realizes how she appears towards others - if not right away then when she grows older and more mature, a characteristic many people lack. (I received a free digital copy via Netgalley/ the publisher. Thanks for the opportunity!)
