Kings most gruesome story

I’ve been a SK fan a long time and this one made me feel the terror and horror of Paul Sheldon’s visit with Annie Wilkes. What a psychopath! I noticed that he mentions The Overlook so the Shining is in the same universe, in this novel. Annie Wilkes’ father is Ralph Dugan, similar to Carrie White (of Carrie), her father being Ralph White. I believe that both characters are really The Dark Man from The Stand and Gunslinger. He is the evil force that causes calamity across multiple plot lines, including also The Mist.

It seems that I’ve developed a love hate relationship with Stephen King’s books. To my mind, his books are either, brilliant like Pet Sematary or awful like Carrie. Unfortunately, it seems that Misery is part of the second category. After a serious car crash, Paul Sheldon wakes up in the house of Annie Wilkes. The former nurse took care of his broken bones, or at least sedated him with painkillers. From her first appearance on she seems to be a bit strange but it quickly becomes clear that she is crazy. Paul, already suffered from a trauma after his accident but soon his mental condition get’s worse and worse. It started after Annie forced him to burn his manuscript, followed by cutting off one of his thumbs, as he mentioned that a letter in the typewriter is missing ,and ended with chopping of one of his feet. Due to Paul’s mental state, it’s a bit difficult to follow the story line itself from time to time and even I lost track a couple of times. After Paul started to rewrite Miserys book, I stated to get more interested in her story than in the actual one. It is safe to say that the book didn’t manage to catch me. The aspect, that disappointed me the most was Annie herself. I don’t know what I expected her to be, but I think, I hoped that she would be a little bit more like Dolores Clairborne. However, what I didn’t expect was that Annie middle aged woman, with the language of a ten year old. She expresses anger with childishly strange words and phrases but she will fly into fits of rage if someone uses „bad“ language in front of her. In the end, I have to say that „Misery“ is one of the least interesting book of Stephen King that I read up to now.

Also alles perfekt!

DNF at 46% honestly the most boring "thriller", Paul in unlikable, Annie is your standard psychopath, nothing new here. also I'm starting a petition to get Stephen King to stop writing women because "She looks like a widow who just got fucked after a ten-year dry spell" is not a valid physical description, Stephen.

. Leider zu vorhersehbar

This is definitely one of my favourite Stephen King books so far. I loved the atmosphere in this book and that I only had these two characters to focus on. As always in Stephen Kings novels there were some disturbing scenes but OMG they were great. And of course I love his writing style which takes you into the story and won't let you out.

It didn't grip me like other King books had. I couldn't connect with the characters at all and I would have liked a chapter out of Annies view. Nevertheless it is a well crafted story.

Easily one of the best King Books. It is quite impressive how suspenseful it is, considering it takes place in one house with just two people in it.

Misery. Kathy Bates and her iconic portrayal of Annie Wilkes is now the first thought that comes to mind for most people who see this title, but Stephen King's brutally intense page-turner has more to offer than this memorable villain figure. In a story that is all about the perspective, King introduces us to the mental torture games that Paul Sheldon, the leading point-of-view character, has to endure. The nagging knowledge that whatever comes next is unpredictable begins to torment the reader as much as the protagonist as the novel runs its course: this is a story that has become so ingrained in pop culture that it's almost impossible to not know what it is about at this point, yet the increasingly terrifying revelations of the lengths both characters are prepared to go never cease to be shocking. King has a history of writing about writers, seemingly taking inspiration from the saying that you should write about what you know. And empathizing with the writer's perspective is something that King certainly knows how to do. Paul Sheldon never really becomes likeable; but he does not need to be, for what is done to him is something we would not wish on our worst enemies. Yet, perhaps the most interesting aspects of Misery arise when King focuses on the creative aspects of the writing process, on the struggles and concerns of writing a book, the pressure, the doubts. Outside of the premise of the kidnapping, obviously, I strongly suspect that King infused this story with many autobiographical elements, be it his own experience with writing, or his drug-related history that heavily plays into the narrative of Misery as well. To my surprise, King went into some significantly darker and bleaker places than I originally anticipated, but there is no denying that he instilled the story with all his concentrated passion as a writer. It's a thrilling page-turner, yes, but also allows a fascinating look at distorted perception and morbid obsession.

Stephen King really knows how to show, he makes you feel what the character is feeling. If we don't know what misery means or feels like pul Sheldon did a great job telling us that. Annie Willes was crazy no wrong word she was psychotic to the point of man slaughter. The seens like when she slashed his legs and the pain, oh the pain was so intently portrayed like it was happening in front of me. Stephen King you are a god in writing cause you make me see in front of my eyes
