i had no hope that he was going to make it but the mf made it.
Kings most gruesome story
I’ve been a SK fan a long time and this one made me feel the terror and horror of Paul Sheldon’s visit with Annie Wilkes. What a psychopath! I noticed that he mentions The Overlook so the Shining is in the same universe, in this novel. Annie Wilkes’ father is Ralph Dugan, similar to Carrie White (of Carrie), her father being Ralph White. I believe that both characters are really The Dark Man from The Stand and Gunslinger. He is the evil force that causes calamity across multiple plot lines, including also The Mist.
Favorite novel of Kings - gruesome!
Thrilling until the very end.
It seems that I’ve developed a love hate relationship with Stephen King’s books. To my mind, his books are either, brilliant like Pet Sematary or awful like Carrie. Unfortunately, it seems that Misery is part of the second category. After a serious car crash, Paul Sheldon wakes up in the house of Annie Wilkes. The former nurse took care of his broken bones, or at least sedated him with painkillers. From her first appearance on she seems to be a bit strange but it quickly becomes clear that she is crazy. Paul, already suffered from a trauma after his accident but soon his mental condition get’s worse and worse. It started after Annie forced him to burn his manuscript, followed by cutting off one of his thumbs, as he mentioned that a letter in the typewriter is missing ,and ended with chopping of one of his feet. Due to Paul’s mental state, it’s a bit difficult to follow the story line itself from time to time and even I lost track a couple of times. After Paul started to rewrite Miserys book, I stated to get more interested in her story than in the actual one. It is safe to say that the book didn’t manage to catch me. The aspect, that disappointed me the most was Annie herself. I don’t know what I expected her to be, but I think, I hoped that she would be a little bit more like Dolores Clairborne. However, what I didn’t expect was that Annie middle aged woman, with the language of a ten year old. She expresses anger with childishly strange words and phrases but she will fly into fits of rage if someone uses „bad“ language in front of her. In the end, I have to say that „Misery“ is one of the least interesting book of Stephen King that I read up to now.
Also alles perfekt!
DNF at 46% honestly the most boring "thriller", Paul in unlikable, Annie is your standard psychopath, nothing new here. also I'm starting a petition to get Stephen King to stop writing women because "She looks like a widow who just got fucked after a ten-year dry spell" is not a valid physical description, Stephen.
