Beschreibung

Set in the world of the New York Times–bestselling Winner’s Trilogy, Marie Rutkoski's The Midnight Lie is an epic LGBTQ romantic fantasy about learning to free ourselves from the lies others tell us―and the lies we tell ourselves.

Where Nirrim lives, crime abounds, a harsh tribunal rules, and society’s pleasures are reserved for the High Kith. Life in the Ward is grim and punishing. People of her low status are forbidden from sampling sweets or wearing colors. You either follow the rules, or pay a tithe and suffer the consequences.

Nirrim keeps her head down, and a dangerous secret close to her chest.

But then she encounters Sid, a rakish traveler from far away, who whispers rumors that the High Kith possess magic. Sid tempts Nirrim to seek that magic for herself. But to do that, Nirrim must surrender her old life. She must place her trust in this sly stranger who asks, above all, not to be trusted.

My thoughts and feelings on the bookThoughts:The ending was a bit too rushed but it's perfect when you ignore that. The characters were beautifully written and I loved both Sid and Nirrim. I searched for a YA Fantasy book that is queer and actually good and I found it. Would really recommend. Feelings : <spoiler> Noooo the ending, I liked her. :( I'm gonna read the second book just because I want it to have a happy ending or at least a neutral ending but not this T_T </spoiler>

"I remembered my earlier thought about how it wasn't wrong to want, how it was necesscary. But of course nothing is as simple as that. Wanting something doesen't always mean it is owed to you."

The story was rather slow, but I loved the romance! But the ending really killed me.... How am I supposed to wait for the next book?

Quite enjoyable start to the series that definitely captured my interest for the next installment(s?)! I feel like "Midnight Lie" really focused on the dynamic between the main characters and also on illustrating what life is like in Ethin, the city the story is set in. While the beautiful writing made these two components lively and intriguing, the plot felt rather slow to me. I really do have high hopes for "Hollow Heart": how will Nirrim's and Sid's stories continue, what more we will learn about the city, why Half-Kith, Middlings and High Kith can or have to live as they do and about the truth behind the magic.
