In 1994, Ethan and his best friend, Billy, fell asleep together in a tent in Ethan’s backyard. By morning, the tent had been sliced open, and Billy was gone - never to be seen again. Thirty years later, Ethan returns to his old neighborhood, still desperate for answers. Soon, he begins to notice strange things happening at night - objects appearing that only Billy and Ethan knew about. What really happened to Billy? And what does the Hawthorne Institute, hidden deep in the woods, have to do with it? Well, I think I need to watch some kids’ shows now just to be able to sleep. I had goosebumps the entire time - most of the chapters ended with a mini cliffhanger that sent my pulse skyrocketing. I even stopped reading at night when Ethan decided to go into the woods alone and immediately started hearing strange noises - nope, not today, Satan! Wasn’t the biggest fan of the ending, but I really enjoyed the rest of the book. If you like thrillers with a supernatural twist, go for it. Lock your doors, close the shutters, and get ready to be spooked!

100% Weiterempfehlung wieder einmal!

4.5/.75 ⭐️ I loved it! The parallel telling of past and present, the mysteries, the paranormal aspects, (although small) the relationship between Ethan and Henry,… GREAT! <3

“Something most people don’t realize until they’re older. But everyone is a little weird. Some people hide it more than others, but it’s true. Everyone is weird.” -Riley Sager My first Thriller in a while and I’m happy I picked it up! I felt many emotions while reading this one, ranging from surprise, to sadness, melancholy, grief and a glimpse of happiness all mixed together. Also loved the writing style and atmosphere it created. 10/10 would recommend.

Perfect for Summerween

This book gave me all the Goosebumps and Fear Street vibes of my childhood - it's like one of those ghost stories told at a bonfire 👻 An unsolved mystery that's slowly unraveling it's secrets, leaving us guessing until the very last moment what really happend that night - or was it just ghost after all?

Up to I would say 45% this book was just boring. I mean, the recaps are important, I would say, but what about the rest of that 45%? Not really relevant. But I really was intrigued by that somehow. I thought I knew who did it, but no — at the last minute, I was proved wrong. But I must say I had some struggles to read that book.

My favorite Riley Sager yet!

a let down

Riley Sager is one of my favorite authors but his latest thriller was not to my liking. The premise sounded really good a child being abducted, a creepy institute and some spooky occurrences.. unfortunately it was very repetitive and a slow burn. Nothing really happend until the 40% mark and afterwards it was still kind of mundane. The big plottwist was foreseeable. I think this might have worked better as a short story. Thank you NetGalley / Hodder & Stoughton for providing me with this arc in exchange for my honest review.
