Master of One

Wenn das Buch nicht Teil einer Buchbox gewesen wäre, hätte ich es gar nicht auf dem Schirm gehabt. Aber dazu habe ich ja die Buchboxen im Abo: Nicht nur, weil es meist signierte Sonderausgaben sind, sondern, sich einfach immer wieder ein wenig "fremdbestimmt" auf neue Bücher einzulassen. Ich hatte da durchaus schon einige Highlights, die ich sonst verpasst hätte. So schön wie "Master of One" optisch aussieht muss ich gestehen, dass ich mich diesmal mit dem Inhalt ein wenig schwer tat. Den Anfang mochte ich eigentlich und der Schreibstil war durchaus angenehm. Aber irgendwie konnte ich in die Geschichte nicht richtig einzutauchen, sodass es mir jetzt auch ein wenig schwer fällt, darüber eine Rezi zu schreiben. Die Idee zur Geschichte war sicherlich nicht uninteressant. Ein Königreich mit einer machtgierigen Königin, fiesen Magiern und einer Gruppe von Menschen, die unfreiwillig auf eine gemeinsame Mission geschickt werden, um die Königin und ihren Magier noch mächtiger zu machen. Hört sich eigentlich nach einer guten und spannenden Geschichte an. Aber, wie gesagt, so richtig fesseln konnte es mich nicht. Die Charaktere waren nicht unsympathisch, aber eine Verbindung kam nicht wirklich zustande. Erst im ungefähr letzten Viertel war ich dann so weit, dass es für mich etwas spannender und flüssiger wurde, dran zu bleiben und das Buch zu Ende zu lesen. Woran es genau lag, kann ich gar nicht so richtig benennen. Es war einfach nicht mein Ding. Was ich zudem ziemlich nervig fand, waren die ganzen Namen. Ich bin eigentlich ein Fan von Glossaren und Zusatzinfos und schaue deswegen bei jedem Buch nach, ob es davon am Ende etwas gibt. So auch bei diesem; genau gesagt gibt es hier eine Liste zur Aussprache der Namen. Nun ja, was soll ich sagen... die Aussprache ist bei fast allen Namen dermaßen extrem anders als die Schreibweise, dass man eigentlich immer wieder nachschauen muss, ob man es sich endlich richtig gemerkt hat. Keine Ahnung, was sich die Autorinnen dabei dachten. Mich hat das extremst genervt. Von mir eine Leseempfehlung? Hmmm... das Buch findet sicherlich seine Fans. Für manche hat das bestimmt seinen Charme und die Idee gefiel mir eigentlich. Und obwohl die Geschichte eigentlich ein offenes Ende hat, muss es für mich keine Fortsetzung geben. Es ist in Ordnung, dass es ein Einelband ist.

I had to read one book from my Fairyloot boxes and I picked this one, but didn’t have high expectations because I heard so many disappointed opinions. But this book surprised me - maybe it was even better because of my low expectations. It’s true - the plot is very slow, but I didn’t mind, because it helps the character development. If you are looking for a book to read in one sitting, this is not it. But if you like deeper characters and slow burn gay romance, this is your story. I read 100 pages a day and this was the perfect pace. The plot unfolds slowly, but you get to enjoy each different character with their own POV (again - slows the story down a bit). I enjoyed the POV of Rags, the thief, the most. He has kind of a dry sense of humor which is my favorite one and I liked to see him struggle in his own way with forming bonds and finding real friends. The love interest is not what you would expect, but is a very special person with sensibility and honesty. I’m not gonna tell you more - get to know this someone yourself by reading this book. The other characters are all very different, but unique. After reading half of the book I felt like I knew everybody very well, their fears, strengths and weaknesses. Once I knew and loved the characters the plot evolved more and I didn’t like to put the book down for studying (unfortunately I still had to). I’m not quite sure, wether I am happy with the ending, because it seems unfinished but is apparently a standalone. I enjoyed reading this book a lot even though it had some minor flaws.

I loved it. It wasn't rushed like a lot of stories are. Loved the characters, my favorite is Shiny. Great world building, enough background to understand the story. Only 2 things that annoy me. The characters were all awfully quick to commit to the cause. Like yes they had doubts and distrust but still, no hesitation to do what needed to be done. And the lack of the sequel. It's been 5 years. I don't have a lot of hope but I really really need the next book. The ending isn't as bad as it could be if we never get a sequel but it's not great either.

A thief/heist, fae, queer romance, a sorcerer, a bunch of cool characters and two adorable authors. Rags' gutter mouth made me laugh so much that I nearly died (more than once) and I fell in love with sweet Somhairle instantly. Huh, what a refreshing book! I enjoyed it thoroughly! :)
