Read this for the Literally Dead BookClub and I gotta say that this is the first book I read with this book club that I really thoroughly enjoyed. It is advertised as a whodunnit mystery, but I'd rather classify it as a classic thriller since the mystery aspect only comes in at the very end IMO. Nevertheless, the thriller aspect of this book was very well done. The characters were well crafted, and the way in which everything was revealed to the reader left me saying O-M-G to myself many times while I listened to the audiobook (my very confused cat who was sitting next to me at these moments can attest to that). The audiobook has a full cast a character, which makes it highly enjoyable. Would totally recommend it!
The Guest List by Lucy Foley is the classic style whodunit guaranteed to satisfy genre fans. Set in a remote Irish island under inclement weather, this novel has a chilly, somewhat macabre vibe that reminded me of classic Scooby Doo. There is murder here of course and the characters are full blown psychopaths or very near. Still, I found this a very comforting read. It's the perfect book to read with milk and cookies on a rainy Sunday afternoon. I found myself literally being a fly on a wall. Lucy got me hooked on the salacious happenings and juicy gossip on the destination wedding party for the rich and privileged. Like all great books of this nature, plenty of people here have strong motives and the circumstances and coincidences can border on obsurd but, who TF cares? It's escapist. It's fun. Wish I could read it again. Maybe I would. Books like this are like crack to me. Can't get enough! More Lucy Foley for me!
I had SUCH a great time with this one! Loved the fast paced writing, the different views and thoughts you encounter because of the different narrators. I totally +1 the "it's a never ending wedding" comment but how can that be a bad thing?! Loved the constant theme of flowers, dresses, drinks, speeches, ... The way the author uses words and phrases is just wonderful, I often re-read sentences/passages and thought "wow, great choice of words". The people all had their ups/downs and even the side characters not mentioned much had a story to them. However it misses 1 star because the ending came rather sudden for me, like it didn't hold the love and energy the rest of the book had..
This book definitely lived up to the hype. I was hooked on the story from the beginning till the end. Never have I loathed a character as much as I did with the antagonist. I also like how succint and brief each chapter is. 5 stars!
