Beschreibung

In their youth, Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza fall passionately in love. When Fermina eventually chooses to marry a wealthy, well-born doctor, Florentino is devastated, but he is a romantic. As he rises in his business career he whiles away the years in 622 affairs--yet he reserves his heart for Fermina. Her husband dies at last, and Florentino purposefully attends the funeral. Fifty years, nine months, and four days after he first declared his love for Fermina, he will do so again.

With humorous sagacity and consummate craft, García Márquez traces an exceptional half-century story of unrequited love. Though it seems never to be conveniently contained, love flows through the novel in many wonderful guises--joyful, melancholy, enriching, ever surprising.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a master storyteller: it is simply a joy to get lost in his narrative. The easiness with which he describes almost 55 years of 2 people's life is amazing. I was a bit reluctant of reading the book because of the way it was marketed: a love story of astonishing power. I am really happy that I started reading it, as it is way more than the perfect love of 2 people. No, it goes deeper than that, describes feelings and situations that have nothing to do with romance as seen in the movies from Hollywood... It touches more complex situations of platonic love, sexual love, marrital love, obsession and habbit. Its characters can be disgusting and pitiful: noone escapes that. Not a book for those that expect the perfect romance, like in Disney world and that is why I loved it.
