Es ist immer wieder eine Freude und so erfrischend, von Lord Johns Abenteuern zu lesen. Genauso ist es auch hier!
Lord John ist wahrscheinlich mein liebster Nebencharakter der Outlander-Reihe und ich hoffe, ihm auch dort noch das ein oder andere Mal zu begegnen. Dieser zweite Band seiner eigenen Reihe hat mir aber auch sehr gut gefallen. Besonders toll fand ich dieses Mal, dass wir ganz genau wissen, zu welchem Zeitpunkt der Geschichte in Outlander wir uns befinden und ein Schlüsselereignis daraus aus einer anderen Perspektive miterleben können. Auch dass wir Jamie treffen, war mir natürlich eine große Freude. Doch vor allem John trägt dieses Buch durch seine Beharrlichkeit, Ehrlichkeit, Neugier, Leidenschaft, seinen Witz und teilweise auch seinen Pragmatismus. Das macht dieses Buch so spannend, unterhaltsam und nur zum durch die Seiten fliegen. Und so war es auch, ich konnte und wollte das Buch gar nicht weglegen, bin durch die Seiten geflogen und habe das Lesen sehr genossen. Einzig am Ende wurde es ein klein wenig verwirrend für mich, wer nun wie mit wem zusammenhängt und wie wir uns das hergeleitet haben. Deshalb ziehe ich einen halben Stern ab.
Im Buch handelt es sich um den Tod von Lord Johns Vater. Man klärt diesen zusammen auf und bekommt darüber hinaus noch Einblicke in Johns Jugend und Hals Entscheidung, nicht Herzog genannt zu werden. Auch Jamie treffen wir öfter an; er befindet sich als Knecht in Helwater. Nebengeschichte, aber nicht weniger fesselnd (und auch etwas herzzerreißend) ist das Kennenlernen und die Beziehung zwischen Lord John und Percy Wainwright, der auch in der Outlander-Reihe öfter vorkommt.

In dem zweiten Teil kommt das Ganze endlich ins Rollen und die Spannung ist kaum auszuhalten. Diana Gabaldon fesselt mit ihren faszinierenden Details von Beziehungen wie zum Beispiel zwischen Hal und John oder auch zwischen Jamie und John. Nach diesem Buch frage ich mich wie Jamie und John überhaupt befreundet sein können nach dem so viel geschehen ist was zwar in Outlander angerissen, aber nicht näher erklärt wird. Nichts desto trotz ist die Geschichte in Outlander davon nicht beeinträchtigt. Ich persönlich finde aber die vielen Details faszinierend zu entdecken und festzustellen wie die Beziehungen sich so zueinander entwickeln. Zum Beispiel zwischen John und Percy oder wie genau es dazu kam, dass Hal sich weigert seinen richtigen Titel zu tragen, John sich aber Lord nennt. Absolut faszinierend!
(may contain spoilers) It's been a while since i last read a Diana Gabaldon book, i followed her 'Outlander' series for a while but got distractes somehow. I haven't read any other Lord John novel before and just saw this in the store and thought i'd give it a try since i remembered loving Gabaldons writing style a lot. I enjoyed the book a great deal and read through it in three evenings. The characterisation was wonderful and i loved the historical setting. The mystery about Johns father was interesting though kept me rereading some parts because there where really a lot of characters to keep track of and i don't even remember most of it by now anymore because it was so tangled. I loved the parts about the more personal site of John in this book. His feelings for his step-brother, the romance, the information we got about homosexuality in that century (distressing to read even if you know about it)... I admit i cried a little at the end. I am def. looking forward to another 'Lord John' novel.
Another solid Lord John novel from [a:Diana Gabaldon|3617|Diana Gabaldon|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1213918339p2/3617.jpg]. I like the character very much, as well as the setting and the historical details. What I didn't like in this book particular was the suspense plot. It felt not really worked out. Also the half plot with Jamie Fraser was absolutely unneccessary. If I hadn't read the Highlander books, I had hated the character based on how he acted in this novel. Other than that an easy and enjoyable read.
