„Oh, look. Speak of the devil. There he is. He's yawning. My, my, what an enormous pink cave. Look at those long yellow stalactites and stalagmites. Maybe today you'll get a chance to visit.“ Ein Junge und ein Tiger auf einem Rettungsboot.

The whole review is readable on my blog Blattzirkus ! :) Plot Piscine and his family move from India to Canada, taking all their animals with them since the family had a Zoo. The ship they are traveling with gets damaged and sinks. Being thrown by crew members on a life boat, Piscine finds himself alone at sea with a tiger, a hyena, a zebra and an orang utan. If it wasn’t complicated enough to survive at sea on his own, Piscine has to be careful to not getting eaten by either the hyena or the tiger, Richard Parker. My opinion Basically Life of Pi would have been a nice story if it didn’t feel so dragged. I had to push myself reading this as soon as possible, since I am not one who breaks off started books. It felt like every thought of Piscine was described, not knowing if he ever would be discovered by a search party and rescued. On the other hand, that is probably how the main character felt while hoping to be rescued – so I can’t be really mad about it. Also it has been fascinating on how Piscine watched the animals and calculated their moves based on his previous experiences with them. How he always had hope within him no matter how bad his situation was in. Managing to get a routine to busy himself day by day to not going insane in insulation is truly admirable. Part of the hope probably came from his intense studies with different world religions. Not being focussed on one of them but a lot of them combined his hope and made him look like a more tolerable person with a wider world perspective. Which made Piscine more sympathetic to be honest. The ending of the book changed a lot of the story’s perspective, as you will see if you read the book. If you have read it, you will probably know what I mean. It gives the story a depth you would not have thought existed within this story. Which is good and bad at the same time for be, because the journey could have been made more comfortable from the beginning on. Waiting until the last few pages to make a turn is a bit frustrating for me. As being mentioned above, Yann Martel’s writing has been dragged a lot for me, yet the style never was complicated or too embroidered. His writing probably has been the reason to stay with this book and not dropping it after reading it for weeks got annoying (as if I would ever be able to drop a book ha ha). Conclusion I give Life of Pi by Yann Martel 3 out of 5 stars because it has been a decent story although I haven’t been too much of a fan of the way it got executed.
