Beschreibung

Weaving fantasy with the shocking details of real history, New York Times bestselling author Eleanor Herman enthralls readers in the first book of the Blood of Gods and Royals series.

Alexander might one day be fated to conquer the known world, but at sixteen his kingly duties aren’t exactly top of mind. Preoccupied with a strange power he doesn’t yet understand and the news that his fiancée is sailing across the sea to meet him for the first time, Alexander finds the newcomer in court, Katerina, is a welcome distraction. As they grow closer, Kat struggles to keep a dark secret: her mission to assassinate the queen.

Kat isn’t the only one close to Alexander plotting something bloody. Rumors have been circulating about forbidden rituals being performed in the night, awakening an old magic long thought dormant and with it the Sprit Eaters. Roused by their cravings for magic and blood, the Spirit Eaters will hunt those with power to the ends of the earth and slaughter any who stand in their way.

With the gods turning a blind eye, and devastation stirring at the borders of his land and within his very court, Alexander will learn that sometimes cities must turn to ash for an empire to rise.

Second read: I did not enjoy it as much the second time around, and the only reason why I reread it in the first place was that I wanted to continue with the series, but I had zero recollection of anything that happened in the first book. I really enjoyed the different voices and different POVs, but in the first book their stories don't really intertwine very much, which was missing a bit (since you don't really get why these other characters get their own povs in the first place) - I am sure this is going to be resolved in the next books, though. Original review: If you didn't know, I study history at university, and Alexander the Great was always this famous, mysterious king, whose story interested me since I've first heard of him. So, of course i was intrigued when I heared that there was a book about him comming out. In fact, I preordered it the second I heared about this book. A YA story connected to history? Sounds like something I would enjoy a lot. And hell yes, I did! The way the author connected historical facts with the story itself was great. The historical accuracy was amazing, and really enjoyable for me as a history student. But another topic which was adressed in this book was the aspect of magic, and thus the story kind of also had a fantasy feeling to it, which I loved. i felt like the world building but also the explanations of the magic were described perfectly, although of course many things were kept as a secret, but even that was enjoyable. This story is told from many points of views, which was amazing too. I love book with multiple POVs, because you can just get so much out of the story that way. The action never seemed to stop, which was awesome. So let's continue with the three "main" characters individually: Alex: Almost everything I knew about Alexanders early years and his character somehow showed up in the book at some point, and it was amazing to see that. His eyes, which were two different color, his friendship with Heph, everything was there. But what I ejoyed the most were his characters traits. He was always so determined to do well in ruling his kingdom, although he is not exactly a king in this book yet. He waAs always the one who encouraged his soldiers to go on; he was always there for them and stood besides them in battle, and you really got that feel from the book too. Another thing that I loved was his horse, and the story to it. I don't want to spoil anything, but I kind of cried a bit when I read it. Heph: His loyalty towards Alexander was amazing to see. His backstory really touched me, and it was just great to see their friendship grow in this book, even though they go through some tough times. I really can't wait to see how their friendship develops in the next book. Kat: Her story was so interesting, and I was hooked by the first chapter I read about her. I couldn't see the things which happened to her comming at all, and I was so pleased by the plot-twist that happened. Next to these three there were other important characters, such as Zo, Cyn or Jacob for example. I all enjoyed them a lot. They were all strong and interesting on their own, and I enjoyed all thier voices a lot. There was no characters whose chapters I would have hated or anything. All in all, this book was perfect! I honestly can't wait for the next book to come out. Septemer 2016? how in the world should I be able to wait so long? ;)
