What an ending! In general, this part was a little more about the bigger picture while the books before felt like more personal stories. At first I thought while it's still really great, I liked the other books more, but than the last 250 pages started and they were brilliant. Everyone got a personal resolution, good or bad, and things came back that I didn't new would play a part. Joe Abercrombie is always good for blowing your mind and making you really care. We get to spend more time with Ardee, which I loved, and, as always, there are great moments and quotable sentences. I just really love this series and even if I'll miss these characters when reading the stand-alones, I can't wait to continue.
Man I just really enjoyed the hell out of this book series and all of its asshole characters! Glokta especially, he's probably the most lovable evil bastard I ever got to follow in a book. His chapters and paragraphs definitely were my favorites and I'm a bit sad that that's over now. TwT But oh well, at least I have a good reason to reread The First Law trilogy at some point ehehehe.
Say one thing about Logen Ninefingers. Say that- This book was a ride. I think it was right to assume that book 2 was a setup, but the amount of times I was astounded by the call-backs to both previous entries in the series still baffles me. This trilogy was so immaculately crafted that not even one minor character felt wasted in the what I can only assume is an assortment of at least a hundred different faces. Every character, from the reluctant warrior Logen Ninefingers who is torn between his good intent and bad endings over Inquisitor Sand dan Glokta, the cripple who finds himself with no choice but to live to Bayaz the First of the Magi and catalyst of ... well, that you will have to discover yourself. But lets not forget the cold beauty Terez of Talin, the huggable warrior Bremer dan Gorst or, my favourite the witty Nicomo Cosca who on the question how he escaped Dagoska would only say: I disguised myself as a woman, and fucked my way out. For now I can't really put into words how I feel but happy. Happy that I got to read something that I enjoyed this much and happy that there is more I will get to read at some point. Probably not for a bit but sooner rather than later.
My favourite character in the entire series is a crippled, sarcastic torturer who’s always in pain. He hobbles around doing his job (described in vivid detail) while relentlessly bitching about everything and everyone. If that does not sell you on this trilogy and Abercrombie’s writing I’m not sure what else to say.
4 Stars Genre: grimdark Fantasy Wordbuilding: 7,5/10 Magic system: 6,5/10 Characters: 8/10 Emotional impact: 7/10 Plot: 7/10 Pacing: 7/10 Prose: 8/10
I really don't know what took me so long to finish this series. Maybe it was the fear of being disappointed since finales are generally unsatisfying. While this book has the potential for future books it is a perfect conclusion. This series takes the cake when it comes to terrible characters in terms of morality that you end up rooting for anyway. Some of them toe the line of antihero and others have crossed the line to villain long ago or are on the road to acceptance in this installment. It is just so well done though. The more mellow and kindly characters have their flaws as well. I loved West in book 2 and he continues to be great in this one. I loved Jezal's character development and Dogman's fraught relationship with Logen whom I still don't know how to feel about. I enjoyed the side characters, Ardee and Shivers in particular, and even the banter of West's generals. I was disappointed in some aspects. The first magi continues to be an overbearing asshole and ngl I wanted him to pay at least a little by the end. Ferro's quest for vengeance never really came to an end and it seems like she really didn't learn anything. I also wanted more of her and Logen.
I don't think there is anything spoilery, but I will hide it anyway. Enter at your own risk. It's about how this ending made me feel. I also want to add: These three books should be read back to back in my opinion. Consider it like LotR. I have been thinking about the ending since I rated this book 5 stars here. Whole series is brilliant and the ending makes sense because of its brilliance, but I've come to the conclusion that I am still not satisfied. Throughout the book everyone talks about what they deserve or don't. This should have made the ending obvious, yet I think it wasn't because it just fits the world of the First Law so there is nothing suspicious going on there. That's why I think that we (people who find the characters' company utterly enjoyable) all got the ending we deserved.
