Hades and Persephone inspired story with elves
I am really sad I have to rate this so low, but I am disappointed. The general idea was great, and I enjoyed the couple, but there was so much that either annoyed or bored me. FYI, I don't really know much about the Hades story (I only know the video game lol), so I can't say how much of it is in here (only recognized the Styx/Charon and well, the death). Also, I haven't read the first volume of the Darkmourn series. This is technically volume 2, but it was said to be a stand-alone, and you can read it just like that, though I kinda wish I'd read the one before cause they are connected. In the last chapter, the characters from volume 1 even appear, and I guess it spoils how their story ended. So this starts in a world where there is somewhat of a vampire apocalypse, and humans life in cities protected by the power of elves. As a sort of payment, each year, they chose humans to come with them to their realm as their mates. This year, even the royal elves show up to choose their mate. One of them is Faenir, whose touch kills everyone, but when Arlo touches him and doesn't die, he almost can't believe it. Finding something he desperately wanted forever, he steals Arlo from his realm, not knowing Arlo has a sickness that could soon also take him away from him. I really liked the beginning, but after we enter the elf realm, the story really slows down. Not that much happens. The actual story is about the fight for the crown between the princes and princesses. Faenir doesn't even want it, but everyone hates him, and he is still the first in line, so there is trouble. Most of it is at the end, though, and some things were pretty obvious. Besides that, the love story, on the other hand, was too quick. Both characters change too suddenly. Faenir regretting his kidnapping, and Arlo being fine with everything after hearing Faenirs backstory, which only took him a while to get to cause his only thought was getting back home, which is understandable, but maybe understanding the situation could help you, you know? He didn't even listen to anyone before. Well, and then they were just kinda in love. That was the part I liked. Their dynamic and the whole "person who could never touch anyone, learns what it feels like for the first time"-thing (even though he got used to it really quickly). I also liked the ending, like what became of them, but there were some questions unanswered. Maybe they will be in the next volume since it was more like about the status of the world. What I didn't like was what happened shortly before the ending, though. There was just too much random death, and I didn't like how the storyline of a certain character played out. Such a waste. This review is kinda all over the place, but there is more to say about the characters, which I will do in the next paragraph, but that will include spoilers. So before that, my conclusion here. As I said, I was disappointed, but it's also not like I hated it or anything. I have more from this author on my tbr and wishlist and hope the other books are better. ⬇️spoiler rant⬇️ So what also annoyed me was that Arlo didn't tell Faenir about his sickness and was rather counting his days without doing anything. His reasoning for that was one of the tropes I hate. Keeping a secret from your loved ones, as to not see them hurt... Well, guess what he will be more hurt when you die suddenly, AND he finds out you kept this a secret instead of trusting him and looking for a cure together! Also, he had the suspicion that maybe the vampire blood he drank was keeping him immune to Faenirs touch. So when it was losing its power, his touch might get deadly as well, and Arlo said he wouldn't mind. Meaning he would rather Faenir killing him without knowing and having to live with that guilt, wtf! I was also a bit confused as to what actually allowed Faenir to touch him. It wasn't just the vampire blood, but that he was already dying, I guess? But wouldn't that mean everyone who was really sick would have been ok. Would he have been able to touch that little girl who died? And then, at the end, his power just changed?! He could suddenly touch the pomegranate without it withering away, and I guess other people as well (that wasn't confirmed, though). He could touch vampires cause they are dead (if he just would have known that from the start lol). Another thing (yes, I have too much to say) that bothered me was when Faenir killed that family in the beginning. Looking back, that just felt so out of character cause, other than that, Faenir was always shown as the victim of others' prejudice, and he only killed accidentally or when threatend/out of revenge. When he kills Gale, he is confused why Arlo isn't shocked by that, as if he hadn't killed someone he actually knew right in front of him for NO REASON! (he said he wanted to test if his touch still harmed, but then one person would have been enough). Idk, that was just really weird to me, and it was never brought up again 🤷🏻♂️ Ok, I guess this is enough 😂 I always have more to say when I didn't like stuff haha.
Generally a really good book. It got a little Weirde at the end but all in all really well written.
