Fuck yeah the future is female! Pure female empowerment and rage with this Wu Zetian re-telling. Truly an emotional roller-coaster filled with tension, violence and a REAL LOVE TRIANGLE!!!! The triangle is the strongest shape anyway 😌It's so comforting and sweet to follow these characters on their journey 💖 PS : yes big reading block, I picked up with huge excitement but... I was depressed haha Can honestly say this book brought me back to reading in general. I read a lot as a kid but through school and uni it became a chore/must/deadline and with this book I fell back in love ❤️
Einfach nur Wow!
Oh mein Gott, es ist so gut. Iron Widow erzählt die neu interpretierte Geschichte von der einzigen Kaiserin von China, aber in einer komplett anderen Welt. Ich liebe die Protagonistin Wu Zetian, die all die Wut der Frauen verkörpert, denen gesagt wurde, dass sie hübsch sein müssen, aber den Mund zu halten haben und dass sie weniger Wert seien als ein Mann. Ich finde die Darstellung von Liebe zwischen potenziellen Partnern, aber auch zur Familie wirklich sehr interessant. Die Welt ist einfach klasse. Die asiatische, speziell chinesische, Kultur zusammen mit den Sci-Fi Elementen von riesigen menschengesteuerten Maschinen und dem verkorksten System eines Landes, das Krieg führt. Zusätzlich bin ich ein Fan von Xiran Jay Zhao , weil sie ein Nerd ist, die aus den Dingen, die sie liebt, Inspiration zieht und auf eine Weise Geschichten erzählt, die nur sie erzählen kann. Wenn du starke, weibliche Charaktere in einer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Welt suchst, dann ist dieses Buch genau das Richtige für dich. Es ist auch auf deutsch erhältlich.
Ein absolutes Highlight für mich! Mir hat alles gefallen, besonders aber die Beziehung zwischen Zetian, Shimin und Yizhi! Mal was anderes als die gewohnten Tropes. Aber das Ende...meine Fresse... Nun warte ich sehnsüchtig auf die Fortsetzung, die wohl gegen Ende des Jahres endlich erscheinen soll! Sehr zu empfehlen, das Buch! Los, lesen! 😉

Also wer eine ausufernde Liebesgeschichte oder eine immer auf das Wohl aller anderen bedachten Protagonistin sucht, ist hier eindeutig falsch. Wu Zetian hat einen Plan und sagen wir mal so: that escalated quickly. Man sieht hier eine Geschichte Mal aus einer Perspektive, die man sonst nur von außen zu beurteilen bekommt. Mit sehr viel Hass, Wut, Frust, Schmerz und dem leichten Funken Zuneigung, der die Menschlichkeit aufrecht erhält.

Was für ein Buch! Das ist das erste Buch, welches ich von dey Autor/in gelesen habe und trotz anfänglichen Startschwierigkeiten bin ich dann irgendwann nur noch so durch die Seiten geflogen, sodass ich das Buch kaum noch weglegen konnte. Zetian, Shimin und Yizhi haben mir alle drei gut gefallen und auch die anderen Charaktere waren richtig interessant. Vor allem mochte ich Zetian als starke Prota, die für sich und die Rechte von weiblichen Personen einsteht und sich von niemandem unterkriegen lässt. Auch das einige gesellschaftskritische Themen thematisiert wurden, fand ich gut, da man sowas viel zu selten in Büchern liest. Das Setting mochte ich auch sehr, auch wenn ich es mir am Anfang nicht so wirklich vorstellen konnte, denn es war was ganz anderes, was ich so noch nicht gelesen habe, aber mit jeder Seite mehr, bin ich besser in der Welt angekommen. Auch der Schreibstil war sehr angenehm und fesselnd, sodass ich am liebsten immer weiterlesen wollte. Und das Ende?? Ich brauche Band 2!
Dieses Buch ist für mich ein einziges hin und her. Die Idee finde ich super, die Umsetzung hätte meiner Meinung nach ein bisschen ausgereifter sein können. Die Charaktere hatten viel Potenzial, dieses wurde aber leider nicht ausgeschöpft. Und vor allem gab es im Buch einige Plotholes/Logiklücken, die mich einfach gestört haben. Anfangs wird man ohne jegliche Informationen in eine doch recht komplexe Welt geworfen, was einige Fragen aufkommen lässt, die leider bis zum Ende hin nicht richtig geklärt werden. Das Worldbuilding ist hier leider sehr lückenhaft und wirft mehr Fragen auf als das es erläutert. Der Mittelteil hat sich für mich leider sehr gezogen. Ich konnte so gar nicht nachvollziehen, wo die Handlung eigentlich gerade hin will und habe die Motive der Figuren nicht immer verstanden. Das Ende hat dann aber endlich so richtig auf den Putz gehauen und hatte ein paar Überraschungen in petto. Hier wurde das Ganze dann regelrecht abenteuerlich und leider hatte ich das Gefühl, dass Xiran hier ein wenig übers Ziel hinausgeschossen ist. Hier passieren auf einmal wirklich wilde Dinge, die sich nach der Logik der vorhergehenden Geschichte nicht ganz erklären lassen bzw. unbedingt eingeführt werden sollten. Und dafür war im Mittelteil eindeutig Platz! Trotzdem hat es das Ende geschafft, mich neugierig auf die Fortsetzung zu machen. Ich hoffe sehr, dass wir dort ENDLICH das Worldbuilding bekommen, das uns hier vorenthalten wurde.
So first of all its an amazing book and so well written. It tells the story of „a girl in a man’s world“ and explains how she lives with the problems and complications in the world. There‘re two potential love interests and a plot twist at the and. I really do love this book and would recommend it.
Auch beim zweiten Mal ein fantastisches Buch.
Wow! Was ein wilder Ritt! Es war toll, mal wieder etwas zu lesen, bei dem die langsam steigende Ahnung, dass fundamental etwas in der Welt nicht stimmt, bis zur Gewissheit am Ende so gut funktioniert hat. Wirklich gut platzierte, wachsende Dissonanzen anstatt Holzhammer-Methode. Selbst die Tatsache, dass das Buch in der Ich-Perspektive und im Präsens erzählt wird, hat hier Sinn gemacht und nicht bloß wie eine "Abkürzung" gewirkt um den Lesenden Mitfiebern mit dem vorgesehenen Charakter abzunötigen. (Und es gibt tatsächlich eine echte - und damit per se queere - Dreiecksbeziehung!)
This book - for me - is best described as: Yes please more. Did the end surprise me? No. Did I see the final twist coming? Yes I did. Does that matter to me right now? Nope, because this novel gave me something I haven’t had in a long time and that is actual question marks and I want to have these answered and hopefully part 2 will do just that. This was the first cliffhanger in a while, that left me curious, so thank you for that! I also enjoyed that the characters actually have to face consequences for their actions, no matter in which direction and what I loved the most about this book is the actually triangular love triangle. Everyone falls for everyone and not the usual two boys fighting over the girl, which I don’t exactly enjoy. In my opinion the characters were very well written. The world building is close to perfect and the writing itself made it very easy for me to immerse myself into the story. I t was very tough to read about binding girls and women’s feet and I had to put down the book and process that for a minute before I could go on. This adds a layer of authenticity to the main character that makes her very real to me. She is in constant pain and outside the chrysalis she has to live with strong physical limits and may never be the most physically imposing person, but don’t you judge her by that cover. I guess the only actual criticism I had, was that I would have liked to spend more time fighting and discussing the technical stuff around the chrysalises, because I really like sciency science fiction, but that’s my own personal preference. Can I add that I imagined Zetians laughter like Tophs in the melon lord scene in Avatar The Last Airbender… I enjoyed that very much. As I did the book itself and I‘m looking forward to Book 2.
This book did not live up to the hype…sadly
This book is so full of anger and fury - justly so - that it seemed to fall a little flat. There is a lot of action, it is fast-paced and covers a lot of ground. The characters actions seem to speak louder than words, so I feel that they did not get enough depth. However, I am very happy about the character development, the casual queerness and their I-will-burn-the-world-attitude!
Absolutes Überraschungs-Highlight. Extrem starke FMC, die man mögen kann oder nicht, aber trotzdem für und mit ihr fühlen wird. Ein absolut uniques Setting und Worldbuilding. Eine ganz andere Liebesgeschichte als üblich. Mit jeder Menge relevanter Botschaft. Und Plottwists, bei denen mir der Schädel geplatzt ist. 6/5 Sterne.

I've absolutely loved the connection between the characters and I haven't annotated a book as much in years (if ever). The last part of the book seemed rushed to me. The whole book was fast paced, but for most of the book the pacing was fitting and as a reader I got enough information, without the story being dragged out. Unfortunately, this changed in the last part of the book. Nonetheless, this is definitely one of the best books I've ever read.
Whatever you heard about this book? Is absolutely correct!!! I adored this book! The characters are so well thought out & the battle scenes are FILLED with tension & they had me so engrossed! Zetian, Shimin & Yizhi are my absolute favorite couple of all time. The build up was tearing at my heart & the moment they finally came together felt like a HUGE firework !!! i'm still squealing about it! The ending made me sob though. It's unbelievable how much I ended up crying & if there isn't going to be a sequel then I shall be big MAD.

Am 11. August 2024 habe ich dieses Buch gekauft, ein paar Seiten gelesen und es dann weggelegt. Heute - am 24. Januar - habe ich mich gezwungen, es wieder in die Hand zu nehmen, da ich nie der Typ bin, der ein Buch nicht zu Ende liest. Es ist 23:30 Uhr und ich habe es beendet. Oh. Mein. Gott!!! Wu Zetian gehört zu hundert Prozent zu meinen drei besten Protagonisten. Dieses Buch ist einfach... Ich bin sprachlos. Ich kann mir gut vorstellen, dass das mein Lieblingsbuch von 2025 wird. ‘Iron Widow’ werde ich von nun als perfektes Beispiel benutzen, um zu zeigen, dass man keine Sachbücher braucht, um sich über kontroverse Themen zu informieren; Belletristik kann das besser. Zum einen geht es natürlich um das allgegenwärtige weibliche Empowerment und den Feminismus, den Xiran Jay Zhao perfekt mit einer unglaublichen Erzählweise verwoben hat. Aber dazu auch - vor diesem Buch kamen mir polygame Beziehungen immer seltsam vor. Ich habe sie zwar akzeptiert, aber immer mit dem Hintergedanken "Wie kann man nur so lieben?". Dieses Buch hat meine Sichtweise verändert, ganz ehrlich. Ich verstehe es jetzt - es ist nichts für mich, aber das Vorurteil ist weg. "Danke, Xiran Jay Zhao", sagen wir unisono.
Absolut fantastisch!
Ein Buch das mit Vorurteilen aufräumt, mit einer Hauptfigur die nicht das "moralisch richtige" tut. Absolut weiterzuempfehlen, jede einzelne Seite war eine Freude zu lesen!
Ich bin nicht sehr überrascht aber definitiv auch nicht glücklich und doch war es genial und ich habe es geliebt.
Also was soll ich sagen: ich hatte ziemlich hohe Erwartungen an dieses Buch, was es ziemlich schwierig gemacht hat, diese zu erfüllen. Trotzdem muss ich an dieser Stelle sagen,dass mich das Buch sehr überrascht hat. Zetian, die Protagonistin, ist so erfrischend anders: sie ist nicht die naive, dumme Protagonistin, sondern weiß was sie will und lässt sich nicht manipulieren, im Gegenteil sie nimmt sich was sie will. Das hat mich wirklich gefreut - gleichzeitig ist es einer meiner Kritikpunkte am Roman, denn Zetian und ihr Co-Pilot Li Shimmin werden als außergewöhnlich brutal dargestellt, während Li Shimmin manchmal sogar noch eine Art Gewissen zu haben scheint, wird Zetian teilweise als komplett gefühlskalt und gewaltliebend dargestellt, das war mir schon fast zu viel. Wer die Nase voll hat von Dreiecksbeziehung in denen die Protagonistin sich zwischen zwei Helden entscheiden muss, könnte das Buch mögen, da Zetian beweist, dass man sich manchmal nicht entscheiden muss. Die Idee der Geschichte, die in einer SciFi futuristischen Welt spielt , hat mir gut gefallen und vor allem der Plottwist am Ende war echt super. Allerdings hatte ich teilweise das Gefühl, dass der Roman sehr "gehetzt" war. Was ich damit meine? Die Geschichte war spannend geschrieben, aber durch die schnellen Auflösungen der einzelnen Punkte ist die Spannung fast verflogen, da alles in wenigen Kapiteln abgedeckt wurde, ein Beispiel: Zetian kommt auf die Idee, wie sie sich und Shimmin besser vermarkten kann und statt dass es einige Kapitel gibt, in denen sie einen Plan ausfeilt oder in dem wir darauf hin fiebern passiert es einfach direkt im nächsten Kapitel. Und das war ein Paar mal so . Es wirkt schon fast als hätte die Autorin Sorge gehabt, dass sie eventuell keinen zweiten Teil schreiben kann, und deshalb (fast) alles in den ersten Teil packt. Warum fand ich das schade? Wenn ich zB an andere mehrteilige Rachegeschichten denke, dort gibt es meistens mehrere Gegner, die im Laufe der Romane konfrontiert werden. Denn wo wäre die Spannung, wenn alle im ersten Teil bereits besiegt würden? Das ist so ein bisschen das Gefühl, was ich bei Iron Widow bekommen habe. Dabei fand ich Geschichte und Idee echt spannend und hätte es gut gefunden, wenn es noch etwas angedauert hätte. Das Ende hat mich auf jeden Fall gepackt und ich möchte auf jeden Fall wissen, wie es mir Zetian und Yihzi weiter geht, daher werde ich die Fortsetzung auch lesen, für mich war das Buch allerdings kein Highlight.
Ein wirklich gutes Buch. Freu mich auf die Fortsetzung.

Das beste an dem Buch ist das Cover. Stilistisch echt ne Frechheit, World Building ne fucking Katastrophe, Charaktertiefe gleicht einem komplett ebenen Zementboden. Manchmal hat die Autorin auch einfach keinen Bock auf Schreiben und fasst mal eben große Dinge auf die man hinfiebern soll in einem Nebensatz zusammen. Aufkommende Gefühle der Reue werden kurzum im nächsten Satz schon wieder aufgelöst. Doppelstandards sind hier die Tagesordnung. Ich wollte es mögen und es gab sogar Zeitpunkte, bei denen ich vergaß, was ich hier eigentlich lese aber dann hat mich ja zum Glück wieder irgendein Quatsch aus meiner Trance rausgerissen. Zwei Charaktere mag ich wohl, weil ich einfach ein Sucker für softe Bois bin und deshalb gibts auch 1.5 Sterne.

Real fresh air with a setting in scifi fantasy, you get a lil of everything, a protagonist you can emphasize with, quite a few turns i rly didn't see coming and a pacing that left me shackled to the pages, even the relationships between the main characters were something so new that i didn't skip through them, they didn't follow any typical path and let me actually enjoy following their bonding too. In general a really good book that left me lounging for more 9,2/10
This was literally phenomenal! I would give this 100 stars if I could. Everything about this book blew me away. The world-building? - Stunning. The writing? - Absolutely amazing. The characters? - Incredible. I expected to like this book since I really liked the synopsis and the little snippets the author showed on Twitter, but I did not expect to love it THIS MUCH. The world-building is very much inspired by Chinese tradition and cultures and reading it felt very modern and traditional at the same time. This, paired with the fact that this is a Sci-Fi literally dealing with a space war, just had me gasping on every single page. What I also really loved about this book were the characters. Especially our main heroine is so flawed and unpredictable, but that made her all the more fun to read about. You never knew what she was going to do next, which made for an incredibly fun reading experience. Also: the way she just DISMANTLES the patriarchy? STUNNING!!! We stan! Not only our main character was amazing though, but also every other characters were brilliantly written. I did not know going into this that there would be a polyamorous relationship in the book, so I was pleasantly surprised by that. And that ENDING??? Incredible! I need the second book NOW.

Einfach enttäuschend. Ich weiß gar nicht, was ich sagen soll.
This book was recommended a lot and I knew it would be good. But I didn't expect it to be THIS good. I love the characters, I love the rage and the other emotions, the representation. It's just so powerful. The historical yet SciFi like setting fit perfectly and make for an interesting world that makes me want to know more. Also I loved reading about a main character that is so unapologetic and fierce. I really really hope to read many more books by Xiran Jay Zhao.

Was hab ich mir von dem Buch erwartet: Nichts. Eigentlich hatte ich gar keine Lust drauf. Und der Einstieg, eine SciFi Story angesiedelt im asiatischen Raum bestätigte dies zu Beginn. So war es schwer sich mit den ganzen Begriffen auf Englisch anzufreunden. Aber als ich erst einmal drin war, war es super spannend und wirklich gut. Ich mochte die Charaktere und die ganze Storyline und hatte ein bisschen was von Neon Genesis Evangelion. Und dieses Ende, wtf. Selten hat mich ein Ende so aufgewühlt zurück gelassen. Wenn der 2. Band nicht schon vorbestellt wäre, wäre er es spätestens nach dem Ende. 1A Lektüre!
I'm late to the party and, tbh, I didn't know what to expect. But I, for sure, didn't expect that! This book is phenomenal and so far my book of the year. Mechawarrior in a version of ancient China and a fight against the patriarchy.
I was looking forward to finally reading this book but I’m left disappointed. There were a few good things. I was intrigued by the gods not being imaginary but literally floating above the world. I liked the mecha elements and the mix of the authors Chinese background with the scifi aspects. It was really refreshing to read a scifi world that doesn’t happen to be some version of the United States. I would love to learn more about the world but we experience it from the protagonists perspective and it is mentioned multiple times that the society keeps their women as dumb as possible so I’m not mad about this aspect. However the style of writing is lacking in my opinion, it reads very unfinished and immature to me. The plot is rushed at times, whole plot points happen off screen when they could be fleshed out more. It feels like there is too much plot crammed into one book so the author didn’t have enough time or pages to write a scene. The main character is pleasantly unhinged with literally nothing that makes her endearing, the love triangle does not do a good job in making her more human. I like unhinged characters but her personality is so flat, she feels like a caricature. I love the poly aspect but the writing around it is cringe at best. I hated the epilogue. It felt like a last minute addition to make sure there’s a plot for the next book. The “twist” was visible from a mile away, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but the delivery fell short. The story has so much potential and I wish the author the very best, but I don’t think I can make it through another one, I’ll just read the cliff notes.

i will never recover from this book
I love this mix of Chinese history and future technology, as well as the contrast between awesome fight scenes and the more political/tactical/quiet part of the pilot career. The writing sounds so pretty in the audio book and I totally ship the love interests in this. Following some morally questionable characters is s big plus, too. I was a bit afraid that the feminism in this book would bei too on the nose and extreme and while the protagonist is all feminist rage, the book portrays the issues in a very nuanced way. There is a lot of unfairness and suffering for women but also extremely empowering moments, the book never encourages man-hating, the biases of Zetian towards boys are challenged and the real issues addressed. The ending was more epic than I would have needed, but this is still a big recommendation if you want both a good time and interesting themes.
I read this book in a day and I loved it. I can’t wait for the next book to come! Also, if someone knows some more fantasy/science fiction books with polyamory relationships, please let me know
✨Sci-Fi Highlight✨
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 🌶️🌶️ „Iron Widow“ hätte ich wahrscheinlich eher weniger in die Hand genommen, wenn mich die Reels der Autorin nicht so fasziniert hätten. Sie beschreibt die Reihe als Digimon x Avatar - The Last Airbender mit Einflüssen aus der chinesischen Kultur und Geschichte. Ich fand das World Building unfassbar faszinierend, vor allem der Mix aus Magie und Technologie. Zusätzlich hat es mich wirklich emotional mitgenommen wie diese extrem patriarchale Gesellschaft von einer körperlich schwachen Frau erschüttert wird und wie sie ihren Platz darin verteidigen muss. Die Charaktere und ihre Beziehungen miteinander waren teilweise ein wenig nebensächlich und konnten mich nicht ganz überzeugen, aber das hat die Story, das World Building und der Schreibstil wieder rausgeholt! Das Ende war ein bisschen Overkill. Meiner Meinung nach hätte da auch ein bisschen weniger gereicht um mich für Band 2 zu packen, aber ich bin definitiv gespannt wie sie die jetzt geöffneten Handlungsstränge weiter ausarbeitet.

3.5☆ ー With all the hype surrounding it, I so desperately wanted to like this book. It sounded exactly like my kind of read - strong woman sticks it to the sexist and oppressive society. And it did start out as close to a 5 star read. The writing style wasn't my thing to begin with, but it didn't bother me too much because I liked the plot. But my god, everything just happened so damn fast. Plot that could fill an entire book filled just 30 pages in Iron Widow. The further I read, the less I felt like the plot made sense. Everything was just so easy, everything moved too quickly and smoothly, which makes no sense in the setting of Iron Widow. I was planning on giving it 4 stars at least, until I read the epilogue. Who just reveals the biggest piece of the storyline in a 2 page long epilogue? It ruined the whole book for me tbh. I'm mad and disappointed.
Was für eine geniale Geschichte! Feministisch, brutal, voller unvorhersehbarer Twists. Und ein phänomenales Worldbuilding.
By far the best and most mind blowing book I read this year!
Wow, what a great read! It left me completely breathless. I've seen a lot of books compared to the Hunger Games, but this one really lives up to the expectation. The writing style is similar - desperate, immediate, breatless - while the story is definitely its own. Really gets dark. Ok, it starts dark but it gets worse towards the end. I loved it and the brutality fit the story and the characters perfectly. A combination of Hunger Games, giant robot anime, Handmaid's Tale, Chinese history and lore. Can't wait to read the sequel.
Absolutely loved it. The premise was weird, but delivered and made me swoon. One of the best fantasy/sci-fi books I have ever read.

Zusätzlich bin ich ein Fan von Xiran Jay Zhao , weil sie ein Nerd ist, die aus den Dingen, die sie liebt, Inspiration zieht und auf eine Weise Geschichten erzählt, die nur sie erzählen kann. Wenn du starke, weibliche Charaktere in einer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Welt suchst, dann ist dieses Buch genau das Richtige für dich. Es ist auch auf deutsch erhältlich.
Ein absolutes Highlight für mich! Mir hat alles gefallen, besonders aber die Beziehung zwischen Zetian, Shimin und Yizhi! Mal was anderes als die gewohnten Tropes. Aber das Ende...meine Fresse... Nun warte ich sehnsüchtig auf die Fortsetzung, die wohl gegen Ende des Jahres endlich erscheinen soll! Sehr zu empfehlen, das Buch! Los, lesen! 😉

Also wer eine ausufernde Liebesgeschichte oder eine immer auf das Wohl aller anderen bedachten Protagonistin sucht, ist hier eindeutig falsch. Wu Zetian hat einen Plan und sagen wir mal so: that escalated quickly. Man sieht hier eine Geschichte Mal aus einer Perspektive, die man sonst nur von außen zu beurteilen bekommt. Mit sehr viel Hass, Wut, Frust, Schmerz und dem leichten Funken Zuneigung, der die Menschlichkeit aufrecht erhält.

Was für ein Buch! Das ist das erste Buch, welches ich von dey Autor/in gelesen habe und trotz anfänglichen Startschwierigkeiten bin ich dann irgendwann nur noch so durch die Seiten geflogen, sodass ich das Buch kaum noch weglegen konnte. Zetian, Shimin und Yizhi haben mir alle drei gut gefallen und auch die anderen Charaktere waren richtig interessant. Vor allem mochte ich Zetian als starke Prota, die für sich und die Rechte von weiblichen Personen einsteht und sich von niemandem unterkriegen lässt. Auch das einige gesellschaftskritische Themen thematisiert wurden, fand ich gut, da man sowas viel zu selten in Büchern liest. Das Setting mochte ich auch sehr, auch wenn ich es mir am Anfang nicht so wirklich vorstellen konnte, denn es war was ganz anderes, was ich so noch nicht gelesen habe, aber mit jeder Seite mehr, bin ich besser in der Welt angekommen. Auch der Schreibstil war sehr angenehm und fesselnd, sodass ich am liebsten immer weiterlesen wollte. Und das Ende?? Ich brauche Band 2!
Dieses Buch ist für mich ein einziges hin und her. Die Idee finde ich super, die Umsetzung hätte meiner Meinung nach ein bisschen ausgereifter sein können. Die Charaktere hatten viel Potenzial, dieses wurde aber leider nicht ausgeschöpft. Und vor allem gab es im Buch einige Plotholes/Logiklücken, die mich einfach gestört haben. Anfangs wird man ohne jegliche Informationen in eine doch recht komplexe Welt geworfen, was einige Fragen aufkommen lässt, die leider bis zum Ende hin nicht richtig geklärt werden. Das Worldbuilding ist hier leider sehr lückenhaft und wirft mehr Fragen auf als das es erläutert. Der Mittelteil hat sich für mich leider sehr gezogen. Ich konnte so gar nicht nachvollziehen, wo die Handlung eigentlich gerade hin will und habe die Motive der Figuren nicht immer verstanden. Das Ende hat dann aber endlich so richtig auf den Putz gehauen und hatte ein paar Überraschungen in petto. Hier wurde das Ganze dann regelrecht abenteuerlich und leider hatte ich das Gefühl, dass Xiran hier ein wenig übers Ziel hinausgeschossen ist. Hier passieren auf einmal wirklich wilde Dinge, die sich nach der Logik der vorhergehenden Geschichte nicht ganz erklären lassen bzw. unbedingt eingeführt werden sollten. Und dafür war im Mittelteil eindeutig Platz! Trotzdem hat es das Ende geschafft, mich neugierig auf die Fortsetzung zu machen. Ich hoffe sehr, dass wir dort ENDLICH das Worldbuilding bekommen, das uns hier vorenthalten wurde.
So first of all its an amazing book and so well written. It tells the story of „a girl in a man’s world“ and explains how she lives with the problems and complications in the world. There‘re two potential love interests and a plot twist at the and. I really do love this book and would recommend it.
Auch beim zweiten Mal ein fantastisches Buch.
Wow! Was ein wilder Ritt! Es war toll, mal wieder etwas zu lesen, bei dem die langsam steigende Ahnung, dass fundamental etwas in der Welt nicht stimmt, bis zur Gewissheit am Ende so gut funktioniert hat. Wirklich gut platzierte, wachsende Dissonanzen anstatt Holzhammer-Methode. Selbst die Tatsache, dass das Buch in der Ich-Perspektive und im Präsens erzählt wird, hat hier Sinn gemacht und nicht bloß wie eine "Abkürzung" gewirkt um den Lesenden Mitfiebern mit dem vorgesehenen Charakter abzunötigen. (Und es gibt tatsächlich eine echte - und damit per se queere - Dreiecksbeziehung!)
This book - for me - is best described as: Yes please more. Did the end surprise me? No. Did I see the final twist coming? Yes I did. Does that matter to me right now? Nope, because this novel gave me something I haven’t had in a long time and that is actual question marks and I want to have these answered and hopefully part 2 will do just that. This was the first cliffhanger in a while, that left me curious, so thank you for that! I also enjoyed that the characters actually have to face consequences for their actions, no matter in which direction and what I loved the most about this book is the actually triangular love triangle. Everyone falls for everyone and not the usual two boys fighting over the girl, which I don’t exactly enjoy. In my opinion the characters were very well written. The world building is close to perfect and the writing itself made it very easy for me to immerse myself into the story. I t was very tough to read about binding girls and women’s feet and I had to put down the book and process that for a minute before I could go on. This adds a layer of authenticity to the main character that makes her very real to me. She is in constant pain and outside the chrysalis she has to live with strong physical limits and may never be the most physically imposing person, but don’t you judge her by that cover. I guess the only actual criticism I had, was that I would have liked to spend more time fighting and discussing the technical stuff around the chrysalises, because I really like sciency science fiction, but that’s my own personal preference. Can I add that I imagined Zetians laughter like Tophs in the melon lord scene in Avatar The Last Airbender… I enjoyed that very much. As I did the book itself and I‘m looking forward to Book 2.
This book did not live up to the hype…sadly
This book is so full of anger and fury - justly so - that it seemed to fall a little flat. There is a lot of action, it is fast-paced and covers a lot of ground. The characters actions seem to speak louder than words, so I feel that they did not get enough depth. However, I am very happy about the character development, the casual queerness and their I-will-burn-the-world-attitude!
Absolutes Überraschungs-Highlight. Extrem starke FMC, die man mögen kann oder nicht, aber trotzdem für und mit ihr fühlen wird. Ein absolut uniques Setting und Worldbuilding. Eine ganz andere Liebesgeschichte als üblich. Mit jeder Menge relevanter Botschaft. Und Plottwists, bei denen mir der Schädel geplatzt ist. 6/5 Sterne.

I've absolutely loved the connection between the characters and I haven't annotated a book as much in years (if ever). The last part of the book seemed rushed to me. The whole book was fast paced, but for most of the book the pacing was fitting and as a reader I got enough information, without the story being dragged out. Unfortunately, this changed in the last part of the book. Nonetheless, this is definitely one of the best books I've ever read.
Whatever you heard about this book? Is absolutely correct!!! I adored this book! The characters are so well thought out & the battle scenes are FILLED with tension & they had me so engrossed! Zetian, Shimin & Yizhi are my absolute favorite couple of all time. The build up was tearing at my heart & the moment they finally came together felt like a HUGE firework !!! i'm still squealing about it! The ending made me sob though. It's unbelievable how much I ended up crying & if there isn't going to be a sequel then I shall be big MAD.

Am 11. August 2024 habe ich dieses Buch gekauft, ein paar Seiten gelesen und es dann weggelegt. Heute - am 24. Januar - habe ich mich gezwungen, es wieder in die Hand zu nehmen, da ich nie der Typ bin, der ein Buch nicht zu Ende liest. Es ist 23:30 Uhr und ich habe es beendet. Oh. Mein. Gott!!! Wu Zetian gehört zu hundert Prozent zu meinen drei besten Protagonisten. Dieses Buch ist einfach... Ich bin sprachlos. Ich kann mir gut vorstellen, dass das mein Lieblingsbuch von 2025 wird. ‘Iron Widow’ werde ich von nun als perfektes Beispiel benutzen, um zu zeigen, dass man keine Sachbücher braucht, um sich über kontroverse Themen zu informieren; Belletristik kann das besser. Zum einen geht es natürlich um das allgegenwärtige weibliche Empowerment und den Feminismus, den Xiran Jay Zhao perfekt mit einer unglaublichen Erzählweise verwoben hat. Aber dazu auch - vor diesem Buch kamen mir polygame Beziehungen immer seltsam vor. Ich habe sie zwar akzeptiert, aber immer mit dem Hintergedanken "Wie kann man nur so lieben?". Dieses Buch hat meine Sichtweise verändert, ganz ehrlich. Ich verstehe es jetzt - es ist nichts für mich, aber das Vorurteil ist weg. "Danke, Xiran Jay Zhao", sagen wir unisono.
Absolut fantastisch!
Ein Buch das mit Vorurteilen aufräumt, mit einer Hauptfigur die nicht das "moralisch richtige" tut. Absolut weiterzuempfehlen, jede einzelne Seite war eine Freude zu lesen!
Ich bin nicht sehr überrascht aber definitiv auch nicht glücklich und doch war es genial und ich habe es geliebt.
Also was soll ich sagen: ich hatte ziemlich hohe Erwartungen an dieses Buch, was es ziemlich schwierig gemacht hat, diese zu erfüllen. Trotzdem muss ich an dieser Stelle sagen,dass mich das Buch sehr überrascht hat. Zetian, die Protagonistin, ist so erfrischend anders: sie ist nicht die naive, dumme Protagonistin, sondern weiß was sie will und lässt sich nicht manipulieren, im Gegenteil sie nimmt sich was sie will. Das hat mich wirklich gefreut - gleichzeitig ist es einer meiner Kritikpunkte am Roman, denn Zetian und ihr Co-Pilot Li Shimmin werden als außergewöhnlich brutal dargestellt, während Li Shimmin manchmal sogar noch eine Art Gewissen zu haben scheint, wird Zetian teilweise als komplett gefühlskalt und gewaltliebend dargestellt, das war mir schon fast zu viel. Wer die Nase voll hat von Dreiecksbeziehung in denen die Protagonistin sich zwischen zwei Helden entscheiden muss, könnte das Buch mögen, da Zetian beweist, dass man sich manchmal nicht entscheiden muss. Die Idee der Geschichte, die in einer SciFi futuristischen Welt spielt , hat mir gut gefallen und vor allem der Plottwist am Ende war echt super. Allerdings hatte ich teilweise das Gefühl, dass der Roman sehr "gehetzt" war. Was ich damit meine? Die Geschichte war spannend geschrieben, aber durch die schnellen Auflösungen der einzelnen Punkte ist die Spannung fast verflogen, da alles in wenigen Kapiteln abgedeckt wurde, ein Beispiel: Zetian kommt auf die Idee, wie sie sich und Shimmin besser vermarkten kann und statt dass es einige Kapitel gibt, in denen sie einen Plan ausfeilt oder in dem wir darauf hin fiebern passiert es einfach direkt im nächsten Kapitel. Und das war ein Paar mal so . Es wirkt schon fast als hätte die Autorin Sorge gehabt, dass sie eventuell keinen zweiten Teil schreiben kann, und deshalb (fast) alles in den ersten Teil packt. Warum fand ich das schade? Wenn ich zB an andere mehrteilige Rachegeschichten denke, dort gibt es meistens mehrere Gegner, die im Laufe der Romane konfrontiert werden. Denn wo wäre die Spannung, wenn alle im ersten Teil bereits besiegt würden? Das ist so ein bisschen das Gefühl, was ich bei Iron Widow bekommen habe. Dabei fand ich Geschichte und Idee echt spannend und hätte es gut gefunden, wenn es noch etwas angedauert hätte. Das Ende hat mich auf jeden Fall gepackt und ich möchte auf jeden Fall wissen, wie es mir Zetian und Yihzi weiter geht, daher werde ich die Fortsetzung auch lesen, für mich war das Buch allerdings kein Highlight.
Ein wirklich gutes Buch. Freu mich auf die Fortsetzung.

Das beste an dem Buch ist das Cover. Stilistisch echt ne Frechheit, World Building ne fucking Katastrophe, Charaktertiefe gleicht einem komplett ebenen Zementboden. Manchmal hat die Autorin auch einfach keinen Bock auf Schreiben und fasst mal eben große Dinge auf die man hinfiebern soll in einem Nebensatz zusammen. Aufkommende Gefühle der Reue werden kurzum im nächsten Satz schon wieder aufgelöst. Doppelstandards sind hier die Tagesordnung. Ich wollte es mögen und es gab sogar Zeitpunkte, bei denen ich vergaß, was ich hier eigentlich lese aber dann hat mich ja zum Glück wieder irgendein Quatsch aus meiner Trance rausgerissen. Zwei Charaktere mag ich wohl, weil ich einfach ein Sucker für softe Bois bin und deshalb gibts auch 1.5 Sterne.

Real fresh air with a setting in scifi fantasy, you get a lil of everything, a protagonist you can emphasize with, quite a few turns i rly didn't see coming and a pacing that left me shackled to the pages, even the relationships between the main characters were something so new that i didn't skip through them, they didn't follow any typical path and let me actually enjoy following their bonding too. In general a really good book that left me lounging for more 9,2/10
This was literally phenomenal! I would give this 100 stars if I could. Everything about this book blew me away. The world-building? - Stunning. The writing? - Absolutely amazing. The characters? - Incredible. I expected to like this book since I really liked the synopsis and the little snippets the author showed on Twitter, but I did not expect to love it THIS MUCH. The world-building is very much inspired by Chinese tradition and cultures and reading it felt very modern and traditional at the same time. This, paired with the fact that this is a Sci-Fi literally dealing with a space war, just had me gasping on every single page. What I also really loved about this book were the characters. Especially our main heroine is so flawed and unpredictable, but that made her all the more fun to read about. You never knew what she was going to do next, which made for an incredibly fun reading experience. Also: the way she just DISMANTLES the patriarchy? STUNNING!!! We stan! Not only our main character was amazing though, but also every other characters were brilliantly written. I did not know going into this that there would be a polyamorous relationship in the book, so I was pleasantly surprised by that. And that ENDING??? Incredible! I need the second book NOW.

This book was recommended a lot and I knew it would be good. But I didn't expect it to be THIS good. I love the characters, I love the rage and the other emotions, the representation. It's just so powerful. The historical yet SciFi like setting fit perfectly and make for an interesting world that makes me want to know more. Also I loved reading about a main character that is so unapologetic and fierce. I really really hope to read many more books by Xiran Jay Zhao.

Was hab ich mir von dem Buch erwartet: Nichts. Eigentlich hatte ich gar keine Lust drauf. Und der Einstieg, eine SciFi Story angesiedelt im asiatischen Raum bestätigte dies zu Beginn. So war es schwer sich mit den ganzen Begriffen auf Englisch anzufreunden. Aber als ich erst einmal drin war, war es super spannend und wirklich gut. Ich mochte die Charaktere und die ganze Storyline und hatte ein bisschen was von Neon Genesis Evangelion. Und dieses Ende, wtf. Selten hat mich ein Ende so aufgewühlt zurück gelassen. Wenn der 2. Band nicht schon vorbestellt wäre, wäre er es spätestens nach dem Ende. 1A Lektüre!
I'm late to the party and, tbh, I didn't know what to expect. But I, for sure, didn't expect that! This book is phenomenal and so far my book of the year. Mechawarrior in a version of ancient China and a fight against the patriarchy.
I was looking forward to finally reading this book but I’m left disappointed. There were a few good things. I was intrigued by the gods not being imaginary but literally floating above the world. I liked the mecha elements and the mix of the authors Chinese background with the scifi aspects. It was really refreshing to read a scifi world that doesn’t happen to be some version of the United States. I would love to learn more about the world but we experience it from the protagonists perspective and it is mentioned multiple times that the society keeps their women as dumb as possible so I’m not mad about this aspect. However the style of writing is lacking in my opinion, it reads very unfinished and immature to me. The plot is rushed at times, whole plot points happen off screen when they could be fleshed out more. It feels like there is too much plot crammed into one book so the author didn’t have enough time or pages to write a scene. The main character is pleasantly unhinged with literally nothing that makes her endearing, the love triangle does not do a good job in making her more human. I like unhinged characters but her personality is so flat, she feels like a caricature. I love the poly aspect but the writing around it is cringe at best. I hated the epilogue. It felt like a last minute addition to make sure there’s a plot for the next book. The “twist” was visible from a mile away, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but the delivery fell short. The story has so much potential and I wish the author the very best, but I don’t think I can make it through another one, I’ll just read the cliff notes.

I love this mix of Chinese history and future technology, as well as the contrast between awesome fight scenes and the more political/tactical/quiet part of the pilot career. The writing sounds so pretty in the audio book and I totally ship the love interests in this. Following some morally questionable characters is s big plus, too. I was a bit afraid that the feminism in this book would bei too on the nose and extreme and while the protagonist is all feminist rage, the book portrays the issues in a very nuanced way. There is a lot of unfairness and suffering for women but also extremely empowering moments, the book never encourages man-hating, the biases of Zetian towards boys are challenged and the real issues addressed. The ending was more epic than I would have needed, but this is still a big recommendation if you want both a good time and interesting themes.
I read this book in a day and I loved it. I can’t wait for the next book to come! Also, if someone knows some more fantasy/science fiction books with polyamory relationships, please let me know

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 🌶️🌶️ „Iron Widow“ hätte ich wahrscheinlich eher weniger in die Hand genommen, wenn mich die Reels der Autorin nicht so fasziniert hätten. Sie beschreibt die Reihe als Digimon x Avatar - The Last Airbender mit Einflüssen aus der chinesischen Kultur und Geschichte. Ich fand das World Building unfassbar faszinierend, vor allem der Mix aus Magie und Technologie. Zusätzlich hat es mich wirklich emotional mitgenommen wie diese extrem patriarchale Gesellschaft von einer körperlich schwachen Frau erschüttert wird und wie sie ihren Platz darin verteidigen muss. Die Charaktere und ihre Beziehungen miteinander waren teilweise ein wenig nebensächlich und konnten mich nicht ganz überzeugen, aber das hat die Story, das World Building und der Schreibstil wieder rausgeholt! Das Ende war ein bisschen Overkill. Meiner Meinung nach hätte da auch ein bisschen weniger gereicht um mich für Band 2 zu packen, aber ich bin definitiv gespannt wie sie die jetzt geöffneten Handlungsstränge weiter ausarbeitet.

3.5☆ ー With all the hype surrounding it, I so desperately wanted to like this book. It sounded exactly like my kind of read - strong woman sticks it to the sexist and oppressive society. And it did start out as close to a 5 star read. The writing style wasn't my thing to begin with, but it didn't bother me too much because I liked the plot. But my god, everything just happened so damn fast. Plot that could fill an entire book filled just 30 pages in Iron Widow. The further I read, the less I felt like the plot made sense. Everything was just so easy, everything moved too quickly and smoothly, which makes no sense in the setting of Iron Widow. I was planning on giving it 4 stars at least, until I read the epilogue. Who just reveals the biggest piece of the storyline in a 2 page long epilogue? It ruined the whole book for me tbh. I'm mad and disappointed.

By far the best and most mind blowing book I read this year!
Wow, what a great read! It left me completely breathless. I've seen a lot of books compared to the Hunger Games, but this one really lives up to the expectation. The writing style is similar - desperate, immediate, breatless - while the story is definitely its own. Really gets dark. Ok, it starts dark but it gets worse towards the end. I loved it and the brutality fit the story and the characters perfectly. A combination of Hunger Games, giant robot anime, Handmaid's Tale, Chinese history and lore. Can't wait to read the sequel.
Absolutely loved it. The premise was weird, but delivered and made me swoon. One of the best fantasy/sci-fi books I have ever read.
