In this stunning debut, a young Iranian American writer pulls back the curtain on one of the most hidden corners of a much-talked-about culture.

Seventeen-year-old Sahar has been in love with her best friend, Nasrin, since they were six. They’ve shared stolen kisses and romantic promises. But Iran is a dangerous place for two girls in love—Sahar and Nasrin could be beaten, imprisoned, even executed if their relationship came to light.

So they carry on in secret—until Nasrin’s parents announce that they’ve arranged for her marriage. Nasrin tries to persuade Sahar that they can go on as they had before, only now with new comforts provided by the decent, well-to-do doctor Nasrin will marry. But Sahar dreams of loving Nasrin exclusively—and openly.

Then Sahar discovers what seems like the perfect solution. In Iran, homosexuality may be a crime, but to be a man trapped in a woman’s body is seen as nature’s mistake, and sex reassignment is legal and accessible. As a man, Sahar could be the one to marry Nasrin. Sahar will never be able to love the one she wants in the body she wants to be loved in without risking her life. Is saving her love worth sacrificing her true self?

Wahnsinnig interessant und vielschichtig. Gibt viele Einblicke wie es vielerorts leider noch läuft. 🤯

Came into this wondering how I felt about the topic of gender reassignment surgery on non-trans people. Came out still questioning but content.

Such a beautiful story. Full of longing. On both sides if one believes (and one should). Beautiful constellations of relationships. Parveen must be the sweaters bean in existence. I came into this story intrigued on how my thoughts would add up on the topic of gender reassignment surgery used for not-trans people. Simply because I’ve never considered thinking of such a concept before. What I got was extreme validation of the transgender experience, love in so many ways and questions I can discover on my own now that I’ve started thinking of them. These kinds of books keep me reading. Making me question what I know and what I COULD know if I actually sat down and considered new concepts. Our main character is incredibly loveable; purchasing a collection of poems for someone she doesn’t even know well with no certainty if she’ll ever see her again. And the entire supporting cast has grown incredibly close to my heart even with the small amount of pages they appeared or even fewer sentences they spoke in. Every character has a role in this sweet small book; something that is valued not enough for books such as this one. Certain things did end up coming short or just feeling like a not-quite taut string. But with this it also achieve a lightness not only in the physical weight of the book but also accessibility in ease of getting into the story, making it much more tempting to pick up and continue reading whenever possible.
